PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie Michael Chung (Medina, Wash.) scored his first career goal to give the Brown men's soccer team an early lead, but Hartford scored twice in the second half, as the Bears fell, 2-1, in Friday night's season opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Hartford (1-2) evened the score early in the second half by means of a penalty kick, before Addrian Knights-Browne notched the game winner in the 89th minute. Jimmy Slayton made two saves in the win for the Hawks. Sophomore James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) turned away five shots for the Bears.
"It was a hard-fought game against an experienced Hartford team," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "I thought there were some bright moments tonight, but again we need to have focus the entire time, and hopefully we learned that lesson tonight."
The two teams battled rainy conditions to open up the contest as the first shot on net came in the 17th minute, when Swomly stopped a low drive by Knights-Browne. Brown opened the scoring at 24:50 as Chung scored his first career goal. Dennis Pyetsukh (Dawsonville, Ga.) kicked a pass out to the top of the box, where Chung stepped up and drilled a shot over the reach of Slayton for the lead. Nicolas Perez (Atlanta, Ga.) also earned an assist on the play.
Hartford evened the score at 53:50 in the second half when Sergi Martinez converted a penalty kick after Rasmus Karlsson was tripped up in the box.
Malcolm Johnson (Wilmington, Del.) and Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) both put shots on target in the final 15 minutes of play, but Knights-Browne gave the visitors the lead with the eventual game winner at 88:01 for his first of the season. Slayton made a final save and Johnson's last shot was blocked to seal the victory for the Hawks.
Hartford outshot Brown, 13-8, and won the battle for corner kicks, 6-1.
Brown will head to Washington DC for a two-game road trip next week, visiting Howard (9/12) and George Washington (9/14).
