PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's hockey head coach Brendan Whittet has announced the hiring of Jason Smith as an assistant coach. Whittet also announced that assistant coach Jason Guerriero has been elevated to the position of Associate Head Coach.
"I am extremely excited with the addition of Jason Smith to our hockey staff," said Whittet. "Jason has extensive experience as a college assistant coach and is a proven winner who will assist us with all aspects of our program. He is an outstanding teacher of the game and is a tireless recruiter with a sharp eye for talent. I want to welcome Jason and his family to Brown!"
Smith spent the previous six seasons at Northeastern, including the last five seasons as an assistant coach, where he oversaw the Huskies' defense and penalty-killing unit, and also worked with student-athletes as their academic liaison. Smith has helped lead the Huskies to a 90-50-16 (.628) record over the last four seasons, including tying the school record for victories in a season in 2018-19 with 27. In that time, Northeastern captured a pair of Hockey East tournament championships in 2016 and 2019, and earned NCAA berths in 2016, 2018 and 2019.
Before NU, Smith spent six years as an assistant coach at Holy Cross, where he served as the recruiting coordinator and worked with all positions with an emphasis on forwards. He came to Holy Cross from Babson College, where he spent four seasons as an assistant coach, helping the program to the ECAC East Championship and the NCAA Tournament. He previously served as an assistant coach for Salem State College for four years.
A two-time team captain at Salem State, Smith was a three-year member of the hockey team and led the team in scoring as a junior. He previously played at Massachusetts for one season.
Guerriero, who is entering his fifth season with the Brown program, helped guide the Bears to a winning record and a trip to the ECAC Final Four last season. Brown went 12-7-2 in the second half of the season and swept the first two rounds of the ECAC Tournament, including a pair of road wins over top-seeded Quinnipiac, en route to the program's first semifinal appearance since 2013.
"Jason Guerriero has earned the associate head coach title as he has been an incredible mentor to our players over his years on College Hill," said Whittet. "Jason has helped to elevate our players and program through his diligent recruiting efforts and his ability to teach the game of hockey."
A 2005 graduate of Northeastern, Guerriero came to Brown after two seasons as an assistant coach at Yale, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014-15. He previously served as an assistant coach at Holy Cross for two seasons.
Guerriero put together an accomplished playing career at Northeastern, capped by a standout senior season when he led Hockey East in scoring en route to First Team All-American honors. Before moving on to coaching, Guerriero enjoyed a six-year professional career, including two seasons with the AHL Milwaukee Admirals where he posted 23-52-75 in 137 games, and also played overseas in Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark.
