PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Brittany Raphino scored a hat trick in the second half, junior Star White netted a pair of goals in the first half, and Brown University women's soccer defeated Fairfield University, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (6-0-1) continued their best start since the year 2000 with their shutout of the Stags (3-3-2), improving to 6-0-0 at home on the season and becoming just the fifth team in program history to remain undefeated through seven games, joining the 2000, 1984, 1977, and 1976 teams.
"We talked in the pregame about putting 90 minutes of good soccer together, which I don't think we've done in the past," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Today we were getting closer and closer to that so as we approach Ivy play we want to continue to be clinical in front of goal. In the past couple of games, we've scored goals but not as many as we could have. We wanted to create more opportunities on goal, and we finished them today."
Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) scored her first three career goals in a 13-minute span in the second half while White (Norfolk, Va.) tallied her second career brace in a two-minute span in the first half on her first two goals of the season. White now has 12 career goals.
Junior Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) registered a pair of assists off free kicks, and freshman Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) notched two assists of her own. Cummings now has three assists on the season while Seelenfreund leads the Bears with nine points on the year behind three goals and three assists.
Sophomore Rebecca Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and freshman KK Haug (Minneapolis, Minn.) each added one assist.
Brown – ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll and No. 2 in the New England Soccer Journal Rankings – posted its sixth straight shutout and extended its shutout streak to 593:54. The Bears – who lead the NCAA in save percentage and rank second in GAA – have allowed just one goal (0.14 per game) on the season.
Junior goalkeepers Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) and Maria Guerrero Martinez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) combined for the clean sheet, each making one save. Thompson leads the nation in save percentage (1.000) and GAA (0.00).
Brown's center back pairing of Cummings and junior Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.) helped the Bears post their 17th clean sheet since the start of the 2017 season. Each of them has played all 650 minutes on the year.
White started the scoring in the 15th minute, knocking a shot off the left post and into the back of the net. After Rosen won the ball with her head, Seelenfreund sent a pass to White who dribbled into the penalty area and drove a shot off the side of the post and into the net.
White doubled the Bears' lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later, finishing off a loose ball at the edge of the goal area. Haug carried the ball into the attacking third before Seelenfreund sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal where White pounced on the scoring opportunity in the 16th minute.
Raphino gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage early in the second half, scoring her first collegiate goal in the 50th minute. Cummings played a long free kick from the Bears' defensive half over the top of the Fairfield defense, allowing Raphino to run onto the ball and slide a shot past the keeper.
In the 56th minute, Raphino made the score 4-0 with her second tally of the contest. Capitalizing on a Fairfield turnover, Raphino carried the ball to the top of the box and fired a shot into the left side of the goal.
Raphino capped the game's scoring in the 62nd minute, converting off another free kick from Cummings. Taking the kick from in front of the Brown bench, Cummings drove a ball into the six-yard box where Raphino rose up and headed home her third goal of the game.
Brown controlled the match, maintaining advantages in shots (20-5), shots on goal (12-2), and corner kicks (7-1).
Next, Brown plays at Villanova University on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
