PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team split a pair of games with league-leading Harvard on Saturday, winning the second game, 5-3, as the two teams opened a three-game set at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Â
Brown (12-26, 9-11 Ivy League) outhit the Crimson by a 9-6 margin in the second game and Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) tossed six scoreless innings on the mound. Harvard won the first game, 7-4, and moved to 24-13 overall and 13-7 in league play to clinch a spot in the Ivy League Playoff Series.
Â
"Collin was outstanding today, and our offense built a lead that our bullpen was not going to relinquish," said head coach Grant Achilles. "That was a great job against a quality team, and tomorrow is a great opportunity to play our best baseball."
Â
Senior Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) drew two walks in the first game for 39 on the year to break the single-season program record, besting the previous mark of 37 walks, set by Scott Simpson in 1986.
Â
"Willy works tremendously hard at both pitch selection and plate discipline, and I'm proud his name will be etched in the record books," said Achilles.
Â
Game 1: Harvard 7, Brown 4
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) provided a strong start for the Bears in the opener, but took the loss in 7.2 innings of work, as he allowed four earned runs with seven strikeouts. Hunter Bigge also gave up four runs for the Crimson over seven innings for the win.
Â
Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) led the Brown offense with two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored twice with one hit and a walk.
Â
Harvard broke a 1-1 tie game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bears responded with a trio of runs in the fifth, as Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit an RBI single and Phillips added a two-out, two-run single to right field.
Â
After two scoreless frames, the Crimson used a three-run eighth inning to move out in front by a pair of runs. Harvard took advantage of an error in the ninth to add an insurance run. Harrison Stovern came in for two hitless innings to secure the save.
Â
Game 2: Brown 5, Harvard 3
Garner tosses six innings of scoreless ball to pick up the win in the second game as he limited the Crimson to just three hits and added three strikeouts. Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) picked up his fourth save of the season and Kevin Stone took the loss for the visitors.
Â
Lomuscio and Delano had three hits apiece, while Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) drove in two runs on a pair of hits, and Homza had a two-run home run.
Â
Brown struck first in the bottom of the third when Homza lifted a two-run shot to right field for his fifth homer of the season. Sluys gave the Bears two more runs in the fifth with a two-out single up the middle, before Delano added an RBI single the next inning, extending the lead to five runs.
Â
Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) provided two scoreless innings, and started the ninth frame, but Bigge put the Crimson on the board with a three-run home run. Harvard made it interesting with two more base runners, before Tomlinson came in for the final two outs to seal the win.
Â
Brown and Harvard will wrap up the series Sunday at noon.
