Homers Power Softball to Game Two Win over Dartmouth, 6-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Cat Seitz and sophomores Karina Chavarria and Katie O'Leary each hit a home run as Brown University softball beat Dartmouth College, 6-4, in game two after falling, 3-1, in game one in an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears (11-23, 4-12 Ivy) scored five of their six runs via the home run on their way to the win in game two after the Big Green (9-26, 6-11 Ivy) scored all three of its runs in the top of the first in its game one win.
"All three of our pitchers gave us great effort and energy today, and we had a number of players step up with timely hits in game two," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "It was nice to be able to bounce back with a win in the second game, and we're looking forward to honoring our seniors tomorrow."
Seitz (Poway, Calif.) and Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) both homered in the bottom of the second in the game two win. Seitz notched her sixth homer of the season and the 13th of her career while Chavarria and O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) each hit her first career home run. Freshman Elayna Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.) tallied two doubles between the two games.
Next, Brown concludes the three-game series with Dartmouth tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 28, on Senior Day with an adjusted start time of 9:00 a.m.
Game 1: Dartmouth 3, Brown 1
Sophomore Katie O'Leary hit her first career home run, and junior pitcher Emily Waters did not allow a run after the first inning, but Brown fell to Dartmouth in game one, 1-0.
The Bears cut into the Big Green's lead behind the solo shot from O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) in the bottom of the fourth, but the visitors held on for the win after plating three runs in the top of the first.
Senior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a double – her team-high 12th of the year – and a walk, freshman Elayna Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.) hit a double, and sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) worked two walks.
Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw her fourth complete game of the season, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits with a strikeout.
Dartmouth scored all three of its runs in the top of the first. Calista Almer started the scoring as she came home on a double-steal attempt. Bryce West then hit an RBI single down the left field line before Tessa Grossman hit an RBI single up the middle.
Brown responded with O'Leary's solo shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth before the visitors closed out the game.
Dartmouth's Shelby Wilson earned the win, hurling 5.0 innings in the start and permitting one run on three hits. Brooke Plonka gained the save, throwing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Game 2: Brown 6, Dartmouth 4

In the circle, freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) tied her career-high with seven strikeouts, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits in the win (5-8). Sophomore Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) earned the save, tossing 1.1 innings of relief and permitting one run on one hit.
The Bears plated the contest's first run in the bottom of the first as Tsiouplis set the table with a double to right field before Cranford sent an RBI single up the middle to plate Tsiouplis.
Brown scored all five of its runs in the last of the second with two outs, pushing a 1-0 lead into a 6-0 advantage. With two outs, junior Rebecca Mandelbaum (Livingston, N.J.) extended the inning, hustling to reach on an infield single.
Following Mandelbaum's hit, Seitz drove a three-run home run to center field, moving Brown ahead 4-0. After Tsiouplis kept the inning alive with a walk, Chavarria launched a two-run homer down the right field line to make the score 6-0.
Dartmouth cut the margin to 6-2 in the top of the fifth behind a two-run single from Micah Shroder. The Big Green's Morgan Ebow hit an RBI double to right center in the top of the sixth, and Morgan Martinelli brought home a run with a ground out in the top of the seventh before Ladd closed out the contest.
Dartmouth's Brooke Plonka threw 4.1 innings of scoreless relief without giving up a hit, and Schroder finished the game 3-for-4.
