PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown baseball team battled back in game two but dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Princeton, falling 4-1 and 5-4, as the two programs opened a three-game Ivy League series Saturday at Clarke Field.
Â
Brown moved to 10-24 overall and 7-10 in the league, while Princeton improved to 13-22, 8-9.
Â
Game 1: Princeton 4, Brown 1
Frank Caprio (Providence, R.I.) led the Bears in the first game as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) added his fourth home run of the season.
Â
Delano also put together a strong start on the mound, as he went all eight innings for the complete game, with three runs allowed and a trio of strikeouts in the loss. Ryan Smith also went the distance for the Tigers to pick up the win as he gave up just one run with eight strikeouts.
Â
After three scoreless innings, Delano scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth, when he lifted a solo homer over the left field fence. Brown previously threatened in the third inning with back-to-back singles before Smith came up with consecutive outs to get out of trouble.
Â
Princeton answered back with three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to move out in front by two, 3-1. Smith held the Bears to without a hit the rest of the way and the Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single to secure the game one win.
Â
Game 2: Princeton 5, Brown 4
Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) and Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) both had two hits and drove in a run in the second game, while Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) and Caprio each had two hits as part of the team's 11-hit effort.
Â
Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) went six innings with four runs allowed and five strikeouts in a no decision as the starter. Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) took the loss in relief on one unearned run in two frames, while Jack Anderson earned the win for Princeton out of the bullpen.
Â
After Princeton scored twice in the first, Deere cut the lead in half the next inning when he doubled and then scored on a throwing error, but the Tigers added two more runs in the fourth for the three-run advantage.
Â
Brown chipped away over the next four innings, starting in the fifth when Sluys hit a solo shot for his team-high seventh homer of the season. Delano hit a two-out RBI single in the sixth and Deere added a solo homer in the top of the eighth to even the score, 4-4. Â
Â
Nadir Lewis scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half as he hit a leadoff single and then scored on a sacrifice fly. Sluys and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) both hit singles in the ninth inning and Deere drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Conor Nolan got the final out on a fielder's choice to pick up the save.
Â
Brown and Princeton will wrap up the series Sunday at noon.
