Â
Brown (10-22, 7-8) won the first game of the series against the league-leading Lions on Saturday. Columbia moved to 16-16, 11-4.
Â
"We couldn't quite get it going in game one, but still scratched and clawed until the final pitch – despite the outcome," said head coach Grant Achilles. "We were able to rally a few times and had them on the ropes in game two, but just didn't quite get the final big hit to fall when we needed it. That's a great team, and we showed a lot of toughness this weekend."
Â
Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) went 4-for-5 with three walks and a pair of RBIs in the doubleheader. Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) had six hits on Sunday and went 9-for-15 (.600) with six runs scored in the series. He also extended his multiple-game hitting streak to six games and is batting .607 with 17 hits and ten runs during the span.
Â
Game 1: Columbia 11, Brown 3
Lomuscio led the way for the Bears in the first game as he went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs for his second four-hit effort in as many weeks. Phillips posted a pair of hits and also drew two walks.
Â
Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) took the loss behind nine runs over 5.2 innings of work. Ethan Abrams limited the Bears to one run over 5.2 frames to pick up the win and Tim Post completed the game for the ten-out save.
Â
Brown struck first in the opening inning when Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) sent home Lomuscio with a two-out single to left field, but the Lions responded with five runs over the next two innings.
Â
Columbia doubled its lead with a five-run sixth inning, before the Bears came back with two in the top of the seventh, as Lomuscio hit a two-run homer for this fourth of the season. The Lions tacked on one more run in the bottom half and kept the Bears off the board the rest of the way to even the series.
Â
Game 2: Columbia 9, Brown 6
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) drove home three runs in the second game as part of a two-hit effort, while Lomuscio and Phillips also had two hits apiece.
Â
Ben Wereski earned the win for the Lions as he pitched 5.2 innings with three earned runs. Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) was saddled with the loss on seven earned runs over four innings.
Â
Delano gave the Bears an early lead with a solo homer in the top of the first and Phillips followed with an RBI single to center field. Columbia gained the lead with three runs on four hits in the bottom half, and then scored five runs over the next four innings for the six-run lead.
Â
The Bears chipped away with two in the sixth, as Phillips hit an RBI single and later scored on a hit to right field, but the Lions took one run back in the bottom half to maintain a five-run advantage. Brown scored twice in the seventh when Delano launched a two-run homer, but Dan Harrington tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Â
Brown will visit Princeton for a three-game set next weekend.
