NEW YORK – Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) both posted three hits apiece as the Brown baseball team topped Columbia, 8-5, in the series opener Saturday at Satow Stadium.
Â
Brown (10-20, 7-6 Ivy) outhit first-place Columbia (14-16, 9-4) by a 10-9 margin and improved to 6-2 over the last eight league contests. Saturday's doubleheader was moved to a single game due to rain and two teams will now play twice on Sunday starting at 11 AM.
Â
"I'm incredibly proud of this team today," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Garett gave us a great start, our offense extended a lead to put us in good position, and our bullpen held strong against a quality team. Tomorrow is another opportunity for us to come out and play our best baseball."
Â
Sluys had one home run and a double as part of a three-hit effort to go along with two runs and two RBIs. Lomuscio also scored twice and drove in two runs and Frank Caprio (Providence, R.I.) added a pair of RBIs.
Â
Delano struck out a season-high six batters with four runs allowed over 6.1 innings for his third win of the season. Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) came in for the final two outs for his third save. Josh Simpson took the loss for the Lions as he allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings.
Â
The two teams traded one run in the third inning before the Bears took the lead with two runs in the fifth as Lomuscio and Caprio both scored on a wild pitch. The Bears added three runs the next inning when Caprio hit a two-run double down the right field line. Delano added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to give the visitors a five-run lead.
Â
Sluys extended the lead in the seventh when he hit a two-run homer for his sixth home run of the season. The Lions came back with three runs in the bottom half, but Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) provided 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work to keep the home team at bay.
Â
After Columbia scored one run in the ninth, Tomlinson came in for the final two outs, as he ended the game with a double play.
Â
Brown and Columbia will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
