PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 4 Brown University men's crew fell to defending national champion Yale in the annual race for the Albert Cup as the two programs kicked off the 2019 spring season Saturday afternoon on the Seekonk River.
No. 1 Yale picked up four victories in the season opener, including the final race of the day in the varsity eight to retain the Albert Cup.
"Our team has been working hard and we will bounce back and make progress in the weeks ahead," said head coach Paul Cooke. "This was a big challenge and we are lucky to have this race early in the season. I know we can improve and make adjustments for the important races coming up."
In the varsity eight, the two crews faced a strong headwind with a heavy chop, as the Bulldogs completed the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6:21.6. Brown finished the race at 6:34.2.
Yale also earned a pair of wins in the second and third varsity races in times of 6:47.3 and 6:55.4, respectively.
The first race of the day featured three crews, including a fourth and fifth varsity from the Bulldogs and a fourth varsity boat from Brown, as the Yale 4V topped the group in a time 7:15.3.
Brown will return to the water next Saturday when the Bears visit Boston University to battle for the Michaelson Cup.
