Baseball Edged by Penn in 16 Innings, 8-7
3/30/2019 8:11:00 PM | Baseball
PHILADELPHIA – The Brown baseball team took the lead twice in extra innings, but Penn scored three runs in the 16th frame for the walk-off win as the Bears dropped the one-run game, 8-7, in Ivy League action Saturday at Meiklejohn Stadium.
Â
Brown (4-16, 1-3) and Penn (12-7, 2-2) will now play a doubleheader on Sunday to complete the three-game series.
Â
"I'm incredibly proud of our team today," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Both teams battled for 16 innings, and we had a tremendous amount of toughness. Tomorrow is a new day to come out and compete to the best of our ability."
Â
Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) paced the Bears at the plate with three hits with one RBI, while Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) had two hits and drove in two runs. Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaksa) and Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had two hits apiece.
Â
Delano went six innings as the starter and allowed three earned runs with three strikeouts in the no decision. Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) combined for six scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Baird gave up one hit over two innings and Tomlinson allowed just two hits over four frames.
Â
Robby Cerulle went three innings to get the win for the Quakers and Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss for the Bears.
Â
After Penn took a 3-1 lead, Brown scored twice in the top of the fifth to even the score, as Homza hit and RBI single and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
Â
The two teams then tossed seven shutout innings, before the Bears broke through with two runs on three hits in the 13th frame, when Delano hit a two-run single to center field. Penn answered in the bottom half when Josh Hood smacked a two-run homer to tie the game.
Â
Brown regained the lead in the top of the 16th as Caprio scored on a fielder's choice and Phillips followed with an RBI single for the two-run lead. Nevertheless, Penn battled back with three straight RBI singles to wrap up the game as Craig Larsen hit the walk-off single to left field.
Â
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow to close out the series. The first game will start at noon.
