Providence, R.I. - Brown sophomore middy Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) and junior attackman Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) scored three goals each, but the Bears' furious fourth quarter rally came up short, falling to Villanova, 10-9, Monday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears fall to 3-5 overall, while Villanova improves to 5-4 overall.
"Hats off to Villanova. I thought they did a nice job and took advantage of the plays that they needed to make," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "It's our job to get back to work. There were enough plays out there for our team to make and the head coach has to get them in better position to make those plays and take advantage of it."
Brown dug itself a 10-5 hole midway through the fourth quarter, but rallied behind Aughavin's third goal, back-to-back goals by Kniffin and a goal by sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) to pull to within one tally, 10-9, with 1:34 remaining.
The Wildcats won the ensuing face-off and used up most of the remaining clock before Bears' senior Carson Song (Charlotte, NC) was able to get off a shot in front of the goal with one second remaining that was saved by Villanova goalie Will Vitton as time expired.
Bears' junior goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made 17 saves, including 13 in the opening half to keep the Bears in the game. Vitton finished with 12 saves for the Wildcats.
Villanova was paced by Connor Kirst, Matt Campbell and Eric Overbay with two goals each.
The Bears were outshot by a 43-42 margin after having a 30-19 shot deficit at the half, outshooting the Wildcats, 23-13, in the final 30 minutes.
Aughavin scored the game's first goal for the Bears, but the Wildcats responded with four straight goals to grab a 4-1 advantage after one quarter.
Villanova opened the second quarter scoring, but Brown came back with goals by Kniffin and freshman Darian Cook (Redding, CT) to trail, 5-3. But the Wildcats countered with two straight goals for a 7-3 lead. Senior Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA) scored for the Bears with six seconds left in the half to trail, 7-4, at intermission.
Aughavin opened the second half scoring to pull the Bears to within 7-5 of the Wildcats. Villanova answered once again on goals by Keegan Kahn and Overbay in the third quarter, and Campbell to open the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats a 10-5 advantage with 11:33 left in the game.
Brown returns to Ivy League play on Saturday, March 30, traveling to Princeton, NJ to face the Princeton Tigers. Face-off is 1:00 pm on ESPN+.
