Fencing’s Masood Ready for Second Appearance at NCAA Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University men's fencing senior Umar Masood will make his second appearance at the NCAA Championships, representing the Bears at NCAAs during men's foil competition on Thursday and Friday at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

MASOOD READY FOR NCAA RETURN TRIP
A four-time Northeast Fencing Conference All-Star and two-time All-Ivy selection, senior Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second time after making his first appearance at NCAAs in 2017. The 2016 NFC Rookie of the Year, Masood finished eighth at the 2019 NCAA Regional, placing in the top 12 at the regional in all four of his seasons.

Senior Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) placed eighth in men's foil, and freshman Anna Susini (Lexington, Ky.) finished 12th in women's foil to lead Brown University fencing at the 2019 NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday, Mar. 10 at Vassar College's Walker Field House hosted by Columbia University.

In 2018, Signe Golash '21 (Syracuse, N.Y.) made her debut at the NCAA Championships while in 2017, Umar Masood '19 (Pittsford, N.Y.) qualified for NCAAs for the first time.
In 2016, Simon Jones '16 (Louisville, Colo.) made his third straight NCAA appearance and earned Honorable Mention All-America honors for the second straight season. In 2015, Brown qualified five fencers for the NCAA Championships and finished in a tie for 13th, matching the best team finish in program history, also set in 2011 and 2012. Jones led the 2015 cohort with a 12th-place finish in men's epee.
In 2014, Brown sent four student-athletes to NCAAs, and in 2013 the team qualified two fencers to the championships. Brown sent a school-record six competitors to the national tournament in 2012.
MEN'S FOIL SCHEDULE
Rounds 1-3 in men's foil will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21 prior to rounds 4-5 action, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 22. Semifinal and final competition will start at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22.
THE FORMAT
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
