Fencing’s Masood Opens Competition at 2019 NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Brown University fencing senior Umar Masood earned five wins in men's foil on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Championships at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center on Thursday.
Making his second career NCAA appearance, Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) totaled a 5-10 record on day one of the championships with a -19 indicator. He ranks 19th out of 24 competitors in men's foil and moved up two spots in the standings with a 2-2 record in round three.
Earlier this year, Masood finished eighth at the 2019 NCAA Northeast Regional, placing in the top 12 at the regional in all four of his seasons. Over the course of his career, he has earned Northeast Fencing Conference All-Star honors four times, All-Ivy accolades twice, and the 2016 NFC Rookie of the Year award.
In the team standings, Brown sits in 21st place out of 22 schools.
Next, Masood will conclude his stay at the championships tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 22, with rounds four and five beginning at 11:00 a.m. and semifinal and final competition slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
