Ryan Aughavin’s Overtime Goal Lifts Brown Over UMBC, 14-13

Baltimore, Md. – Sophomore middy Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) scored on a pass from junior Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT) with 3:06 remaining in overtime to lift Brown (2-1) to a 14-13 win over UMBC (1-3) Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
"This was a great team win," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "The face-off phase made plays all game and our defense made key plays when we needed them."
It wasn't easy for the Bears, who held a 13-9 lead after three quarters, only to have UMBC send the game into overtime at 13-13.
Brown junior attackman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) had a big day for the Bears with five goals. Senior Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA) and freshman Darian Cook (Redding, CT) each scored two goals.
The Bears won 21-of 31-face-offs, with junior Jason Simaan (Newport Beach, CA) capturing 15-of-23 face-offs and sophomore Matt McShea (Winnetka, IL) earning six wins in eight face-offs.
Bears' junior All-American goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made big saves when he needed to and finished with nine saves overall. UMBC goalie Jack Morton came up with 13 saves for the game.
The Retrievers were paced by Brett McIntyre, who also scored five goals, while Josh Jordan chipped in with three goals.
The Bears fell behind 2-0, but goals by McCaleb, Newsome and McCaleb again gave Brown a 3-2 advantage. A late goal by UMBC's Ryan Frawley evened the game at 3-3 after one quarter.
After an exchange of goals, Brown led by as many as two goals in the second quarter, 7-5, when Kniffin scored at the 7:00 mark. The Retrievers quickly responded with three straight goals for an 8-7 advantage, before McCaleb tied the game, 8-8, at the half.
UMBC grabbed a 9-8 lead on a McIntyre goal with 13:12 left in the third quarter.
That's when Brown seemingly took control, scoring five unanswered goals to establish a 13-9 lead after three quarters. McCaleb, Newsome, sophomore Riley Stewart (Darien, CT), sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) and Cook each scored goals for the Bears.
The Retrievers had the better of play for most of the fourth quarter, scoring four straight goals to tie the game, 13-13, with McIntyre tying the game with 2:42 remaining.
Brown will take on former head coach Lars Tiffany '90 and the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, March 10 at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, VA. Face-off is 1:00 pm.
