#12 Virginia Rallies For 14-13 Overtime Win Over Brown
3/10/2019 4:04:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Charlottesville, Va. - Michael Kraus scored his fifth goal of the game with 1:02 remaining in overtime to rally #12 Virginia (4-2) to a 14-13 win over Brown (2-2) at Klockner Field for its third straight overtime victory.
Brown, who was playing its second straight overtime game, couldn't get any traction in the extra period with Virginia winning the opening face-off and controlling the action. Bears' All-American junior goalie Phil Goss was brilliant throughout the game and made an early save in overtime.
Virginia had rallied from a four goal fourth quarter deficit to send the game into overtime on Kraus' fourth goal of the game with 3:31 remaining.
The match-up between the Bears and Cavaliers reunited former Brown head coach and current Virginia head coach Lars Tiffany '90 with the Bears' senior class, who he had coached to the NCAA National Semifinals in 2016.
"It was a great game to be a part of and I feel terribly we came up short," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "Those games are always on the head coach and I take full responsibility. I love this team and we will continue to grind and improve to make sure we are on the other side of those games."
Senior Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) led Brown with three goals, while senior Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA), sophomore Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY), senior Carson Song (Charlotte, NC) and sophomore George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) netted two goals each. Aughavin also added three assists for the Bears for five points overall.
Goss made 15 saves in net for the Bears, while Virginia goalie Alex Rode registered 19 saves.
Kraus added two assists to go with his five goals, while Ian Laviano added four goals for the Cavaliers.
Both teams played wide-open, up-and-down the field lacrosse from the opening face-off. Neither team led by more than a goal through the opening half, with the game tied 4-4 after one quarter.
The Cavaliers held a 6-5 lead at the 10:59 mark of the second quarter, but the Bears quickly countered on goals by Newsome ay 9:34 and Grell at 8:32 to gain a 7-6 lead at the half.
Brown opened up what was the largest lead by either team at the time, 9-6, on an early goal by McCaleb and later by Cook at 8:26.
Matt Moore scored for the Cavaliers to trail, 9-7, but quick goals by McCaleb and Grell increased Brown's lead to 11-7 with 4:29 remaining. A late goal by Virginia's Dox Aitken cut Brown's lead to 11-8 after three quarters.
Song's goal at the outset of the fourth quarter put the Bears back up by four goals, 12-8, but Dox Aitken and Laviano answered with goals for the Cavaliers to trail, 12-10.
Bears' freshman George Pike (Woodside, CA) scored his first career goal and extend Brown's lead to 13-10 with 6:52 remaining.
Goals by Laviano, Moore and Krause tied the game for the Cavaliers, 13-13, with 3:21 left to send the game into overtime.
Brown returns to action next Saturday, March 16, opening its Ivy League season at home against Harvard. Face-off is 4:00 pm at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
