KINGSTON, R.I. – Freshman pitcher Lauren Innerst pitched her third complete game of the season, but Brown University softball dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon at the URI Softball Complex.
Playing in their first game in the Ocean State and making their debut in the Northeast region this season, the Bears (5-8) fell to the Rams (11-10) as the hosts scored one run in each of the first, second, and third innings.
"Over our first three weeks of the season we've been able to get a lot of players experience, which is important as we head into conference play," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We need to clean up a few things in practice over the next couple of days, but we are excited and ready to begin Ivy League play at Cornell this weekend."
Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) threw a complete-game 6.0 innings, allowing the three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in the loss (2-2).
Senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) posted a double while senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) and freshmen Ivy Hobson (Los Angeles, Calif.), Madeline Charles (Fillmore, Calif.), and Elayna Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.) each added a single.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Ari Castillo doubled to left field, scoring Sami Villareal. URI extended its lead to 2-0 in the last of the second as Rebecca Simms sent an RBI double to right center, plating Erika Yeager.
URI scored the game's final run in the bottom of the third frame as Susan Harrison drove a double to center field, bringing home Erica Robles and making the score 3-0.
Rhode Island starting pitcher Sarah Gunderson hurled a complete-game 7.0 innings, permitting five hits with five strikeouts in the win (4-4).
Next, Brown opens Ivy League play at Cornell University with a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 24 at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Monday, Mar. 25 with the time of the first pitch to be determined.
