
Masood, Susini Pace Fencing at NCAA Northeast Regional

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Umar Masood placed eighth in men's foil, and freshman Anna Susini finished 12th in women's foil to lead Brown University fencing at the 2019 NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday at Vassar College's Walker Field House hosted by Columbia University.

Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) finished in the top 12 at the NCAA Regional for the fourth consecutive year, posting a 13-10 record on the day in a field of 34 competitors. Making her debut at the NCAA Regional level, Susini (Lexington, Ky.) registered the top finish for the women's side and posted nine wins in a weapon with 42 entrants.

"Brown fencing fought bravely at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Vassar, one of the most competitive regions in NCAA fencing," Brown head coach Alex Ripa said. Two Brown fencers were able to make the final twelve: captain Umar Masood, and freshman Anna Susini."

Brown's other top-21 finishers included sophomore Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) – who finished 15th out of 50 in women's epee – freshman Nathan Sinai (Merion Station, Pa.) – who came in 16th out of 42 in men's epee – freshman Timmy Frank (Portland, Ore.) – who came in 19th out of 42 in men's epee – and sophomore Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) – who came in 21st out of 42 in women's foil.

"I was very impressed with our team's effort and accomplishments during this season's campaign, and especially pleased to have had an entire women's side qualified for this regional event," Ripa said. "In the next day or so, we will hear if Brown will have any representatives at the NCAA Championships in Cleveland, but, regardless, I'm excited for next season and for this team to continue its amazing progress!"

Also in men's epee, freshman Benjamin Ryjikov (Scarsdale, N.Y.) registered a 31st-place finish, and in men's sabre, sophomore Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) came in 25th out of 33 competitors.

In women's sabre in a field of 40 entrants, sophomore Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) came in 22nd, junior Jenny Fu (Beijing, China) placed 25th, junior Sabrina Edelman (New York, N.Y.) came in 26th, and senior Claudia Jiang (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished 33rd.

In women's epee, junior Sophie Ulene (Scarsdale, N.Y.) came in 34th out of 50 competitors, and sophomore Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.) placed 47th while in women's foil senior Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) finished in 38th out of 42.

Next, Brown will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships from Mar. 21-24 in Cleveland, Ohio. The NCAA will announce selections on Mar. 12.
