
Women’s Water Polo Falls at No. 15 Harvard, 7-6

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Katie Klein scored two goals, and junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns made 10 saves, but Brown University women's water polo fell at No. 15 Harvard University, 7-6, on Friday night at Blodgett Pool in its Collegiate Water Polo Association opener.
The Bears (10-3, 0-1 CWPA) tied the game at 6-6 with 3:52 remaining before the host Crimson (10-0, 1-0 CWPA) scored the game-winning goal with 3:04 left to remain undefeated.
"We played really tough against a nationally ranked team," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "I give credit to Harvard – they made a few more plays tonight. This was a good measuring stick for us, and we still have three more challenging games ahead of us this weekend."
Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) led the Bears with her two goals while senior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) totaled a goal, an assist, and two steals. Freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) posted a goal and two steals, and sophomore Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) notched a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) scored one goal, senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) registered two steals and two ejections drawn, and senior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) drew three ejections.
Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) stopped 10 shots, making double-figure saves for the third time this season.
After Harvard opened the game with a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter, Czajka cut the margin to 2-1 at the 6:44 mark of the frame. The Crimson pulled ahead 3-1 before Hughes and Klein netted back-to-back goals to send the game to halftime tied at 3-3.
Harvard pulled ahead 5-3 with 5:15 to go in the third quarter prior to consecutive goals from McDougal and Keck that knotted the score at 5-5 with 2:18 remaining in the third.
With the two teams still tied 5-5 in the fourth quarter, Harvard went ahead 6-5 with 4:09 to go. Klein drew the Bears level at 6-6 with 3:52 on the clock. The Crimson netted the game's final goal with 3:03 remaining.
Next, Brown plays in three games at the Harvard Invitational this weekend, facing No. 11 UC Davis (Mar. 2, 11:45 a.m.), No. 24 Cal Baptist (Mar. 2, 6:00 p.m.), and Gannon (Mar. 3, 11:45 a.m.).
