
Women’s Water Polo Falls to No. 11 UC Davis, 12-8, No. 24 Cal Baptist, 10-8

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's water polo challenged a pair of nationally ranked opponents at the Harvard Invitational before falling to No. 11 University of California, Davis, 12-8, and No. 24 California Baptist University, 10-8, on Saturday at Blodgett Pool.
The Bears (10-5) remained tied, 4-4, with the Aggies (9-8) at the half and stayed within 6-4 of the Lancers (9-8) at the break prior to dropping both contests.
"We played two very good teams today and held our own in both games," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "While we didn't get the results we hoped for, these are the kind of games that help us get better."
Between the two games, senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.), junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) and freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) each scored three goals.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Harvard Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 3, at 11:45 a.m. against Gannon.
Game 1 – No. 11 UC Davis 12, Brown 8
Seniors McKenna Miller and Allison Woo each scored two goals as Brown pushed No. 11 UC Davis in an eventual 12-8 setback on Saturday afternoon in its first game of the day the Harvard Invitational.
The Bears and Aggies stood tied at 4-4 at halftime, and Brown pulled within 10-8 with 3:06 to play before nationally ranked UC Davis held on for the win.
Miller (Danville, Calif.) and Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) paced the Brown offense with their pair of goals. Junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.), sophomores Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) and Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.), and freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) each netted one goal.
Czjaka led Brown with four steals while Miller notched six ejections drawn and two steals. Perez dished out a team-best two assists.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made seven saves.
After UC Davis opened the game with a 1-0 lead, the Bears used a 3-0 run to take a 3-1 edge with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. Hughes, Woo, and Czajka provided the Bears' goals during the run. Brown remained ahead 3-2 at the end of one.
Following an Aggie marker, Perez put Brown back in the lead, 4-3, with 2:39 left in the first half. UC Davis sent the game to halftime knotted at 4-4.
The Aggies started the second half with three straight goals to pull ahead 7-4 at the 4:34 mark of the third quarter before Miller stemmed the run. UCD led 8-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
Miller's second goal of the game brought Brown within 9-6 with 6:27 to go, and back-to-back goals from Woo and Atwell cut the deficit to 10-8 with 3:06 on the clock before the Aggies added two insurance goals to hold off the Bears' fourth-quarter rally.

Freshman Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) posted a goal, two assists, and four ejections drawn, sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) notched a goal and two assists, and senior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) contributed a goal and an assist.
Freshman goalie Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) turned aside four shots.
After Cal Baptist opened the game with a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, Atwell netted the first goal of the second quarter. Following a Lancer marker, Czajka and Atwell scored back-to-back goals to bring Brown level at 3-3 with 5:13 left in the second quarter.
A goal from Klein kept the game tied at 4-4 with 3:09 to go in the half before a pair of Cal Baptist goals pushed CBU ahead 6-4 at the intermission.
CBU extended its lead to 8-4 in the third quarter before goals from Perez and Miller helped Brown pull within 9-6 heading to the fourth frame. Rosas scored with 5:32 to play to cut the score to 9-7, and a goal from Czajka with 19 seconds left brought Brown within 10-8.
