PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team broke four more program records on the third day of the Ivy League Championships on Friday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
"Our men are pushing themselves to their limits with four more school records shattered today," said head coach Chris Ip. "We saw a well-rounded performance by our entire team of swimmers and divers. We closed out the individual session with a 2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke by two of our team captains; Coley Sullivan and Joon Sung."
Sophomore Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) set a new school record and swam a personal best time of 3:50.61 in the 400 IM en route to finishing seventh overall in the event. Freshman Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) finished 12th overall with his 3:52.07 performance in the preliminary heats, good enough for third in Brown's history. Senior Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished 22nd in the event with a 3:58.23.
In the 100 butterfly, senior Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) was the highest finishing Bear, placing 12th in the event. His preliminary swim of 47.68 was good enough for fifth in team history. The next highest finisher in the event was freshman I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.), who placed 15th. His preliminary time of 47.99 was a personal best and ranks him seventh all time in program history. Junior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the C-Final of the event in 47.97, a best time and good enough for sixth all time in team history. Behind Sung in the C-Final were freshman Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) in 19th and junior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) in 20th. Hess's time in finals (48.58) ranks him 12th all time in team history, while Stephens' preliminary swim (48.61) put him just behind him in 13th.
Junior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) broke the team record en route to winning the B-Final of the 200 freestyle and placing ninth place with a 1:35.31. His performance broke the team record that sophomore Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) had previously set in the preliminary heats. Lincoln went on to place seventh in the championship final with a 1:36.17, good enough for second in team history. Junior Alex Smilenov's (Katy, Texas) 1:38.09 was good enough for a 13th place finish in the event.
Sophomore Max Pokutta (Palo Alto, Calif.) swam to the third fastest 100 breaststroke performance all time in Brown history with his 54.73 in the preliminary heats. He went on to finish seveth in the event. Senior Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) was the only other Bear in the event, swimming to a 54.99 in the preliminary heats, good enough for fifth in program history. He would go on to place 13th in the event.
Junior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) and Sung finished the individual events off with a huge bang as they swam to a second and third place finish, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. Sullivan broke his own program record in the preliminary heats, with a 47.13. Sung's performance in finals (47.64) puts him behind Sullivan and second in team history. They are the only two swimmers in program history under the 48-second barrier. Freshman Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) placed 18th in the event with a 49.28, good enough for ninth in program history. Qiao's 49.98 from the preliminary heats ranks him 14th in program history. He went on to place 24th in the event.
In diving, freshman Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) qualified for Saturday's championship final for the 3-meter, placing sixth in the preliminary round. Junior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and sophomore Ivan Ip (Rosemead, Calif.) finished in 19th and 23rd, respectively.
The 400 medley relay team of Sullivan, Pokutta, Brown and Cline broke the program record in the event by almost two full seconds en route to finishing sixth in the event.
I'm proud that our athletes are willing to compete in multiple events to move our program forward, said Ip. "We're looking forward to closing out the 2019 Ivy League Championships on Saturday."
Brown remains in sixth place in the standings with 596.50 points while Harvard has distanced itself from the pack with 1015.50 points.
The Bears will wrap up the Ivy League Championship tomorrow (March 2) with prelims starting at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay starting at 6:00 p.m.
