
Men’s Swimming & Diving Closes Out the Ivy League Championships by Breaking a School Relay Record

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team closed out the Ivy League Championships on Saturday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The Bears finished in sixth place with 884 points and broke 11 school records over four days of the championships. Harvard won the championships with 1432.50 points while Princeton took second (1209.50).
"I'm so proud of our men," said head coach Chris Ip. "We ended up breaking 11 school records this weekend, including every single relay. The team has closed the gap on the league and, with our young roster, our future is bright."
In the 3-meter for diving, freshman Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) finished eighth, competing in his first ever Ivy League Championships final.
Junior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) swam to a third place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:44.54. It was Sullivan's third individual medal in the championships. Senior Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) capped off his Brown career by winning the B-Final of the event and placing ninth with a lifetime best time of 1:45.88. His performance is good enough for fourth all time in program history. Freshman Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) swam to a 1:45.91 in the preliminary heats before going on to place 14th in the event. His time ranks him just behind Nick Brown, in fifth place all time in team history.
In the 100 freestyle, junior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) claimed his third medal of the weekend by placing fifth. His preliminary heats time of 43.18 was a lifetime best performance. Junior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) swam to a 14th place finish in the event. His preliminary heats time of 43.75 puts him third in team history. Sophomore Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed 18th in the event with a lifetime best time of 44.31, good enough for eighth all time in program history. Just behind Lincoln in the C-Final were freshman Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah), placing 19th with a 44.53, and junior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam), placing 20th with a 44.63. Hess' time ranks 10th in program history.
Senior Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) was the highest placing Bear in the 200 breaststroke (11th), dipping under the 2-minute barrier for the first time with a 1:59.58. He finishes his Brown career ranked third in program history in the event. Freshman Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) finished 14th in the event. His time from the preliminary heats, a 2:00.20, puts him fifth in program history. Sophomore Max Pokutta (Palo Alto, Calif.) dipped under the 2-minute barrier in the preliminary heats with a 1:59.76, good enough to move him up to fourth in team history. He went on to finish 16th in the event.
In the 200 butterfly, freshman I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) swam to a 1:47.93 in the event to lead the way for the Bears, placing 12th. His time puts him fifth in program history. Senior Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was just behind Qiao, closing his Brown career with a 1:48.44, good enough for 13th in the event and moving him up to seventh in program history. Junior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished his meet with a 16th place finish in the B-Final. Sophomore Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) dipped under the 1:50-barrier for the first time, swimming to a 1:49.81 and placing 22nd in the event. His performance ranks him 13th in program history.
Sophomore Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) and freshman Nico Ortega (Caracas, Venezuela/Westport, Conn.) finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the 1650 freestyle. Ortega's performance of 15:59.65 puts him 20th in team history.
The Bears closed the championships with the 400 freestyle relay team of Cline, Sullivan, Lincoln and Smilenov breaking the school record by almost two second en route to placing fourth in the event with a 2:53.38. Cline also led the relay off with a 42.87 to break the team record in the 100 freestyle.
