Petrillo Wins All-Around, Costa Takes Vault, Bars to Lead Gymnastics at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Freshman Sophia Petrillo won the all-around, and fellow freshman Mei Li Costa captured the vault and bars titles as Brown University gymnastics scored a 191.000 and placed third at a quad meet at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra.

"We had some really strong individual performances today," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "Sophia Petrillo won the all-around for the first time in her career, and Mei Li Costa won the vault and bars titles for the third time in our first five meets. It's great to see two freshmen performing so well so early in their careers."

Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) won the all-around with a career-high 38.375 while Costa won the vault title behind a 9.725 and the bars title with a career-best 9.875. Costa captured both titles in the same meet for the third time this year.

In the team standings, the host Penn Quakers came in first with a 193.900, the Cornell University Big Red placed second with a 191.125, Brown finished third with its 191.000, and the Ursinus College Bears came in fourth with a 183.025.

As a team, Brown scored a 48.025 on vault, a 47.900 on bars, a 47.675 on beam, and a 47.400 on floor.

Costa took first place on vault behind her 9.725 while sophomore Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) came in second with a 9.700, tying her season high. Senior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) scored a 9.575, Petrillo tallied a 9.525, and senior Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) added a 9.500.

On bars, Costa captured the event title with her career-best score of 9.875. Gardner and Petrillo both posted career highs with a 9.650 and 9.625 respectively. Sophomore Caroline Warren (Pawleys Island, S.C.) registered a 9.550.

Sophomore Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) paced Brown on beam with a 9.725 while sophomore Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched a 9.525. Petrillo and senior Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) each scored a 9.500, and senior Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) recorded a 9.425.

On floor, Petrillo led Brown with a career-high 9.725, and Gardner finished with a career-best 9.600. Domonoske tallied a 9.500, and sophomore Kate Nelson (Montara, Calif.) registered a 9.400.

Next, Brown hosts Rhode Island College and Southern Connecticut State University for a tri-meet on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
