Men’s Epee Goes Undefeated, Fencing Finishes 6-6 at Eric Sollee Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Timmy Frank went 16-2 to lead men's epee to a 6-0 undefeated squad mark as Brown University fencing combined for a 6-6 record at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Sunday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Johnson Athletic Center.
"We had a strong showing in the penultimate event in this year's campaign!" Brown head coach Alex Ripa said. "Our men's epee went undefeated, and there were standout bouts across all weapons. The final step is Ivies at Yale next weekend."
The Brown women finished with a 4-2 record, earning wins over Haverford (20-7), Hunter (27-0), Yeshiva (27-0), and NJIT (16-11), while falling to NYU (15-12) and Stevens Tech (17-10).
The Bears' men's side posted a 2-4 mark behind victories over Hunter (21-6) and Yeshiva (24-2*), while dropping decisions to NYU (18-9), Haverford (16-11), Stevens Tech (15-12), and NJIT (20-7).
At the squad level, men's epee paced the Bears with its 6-0 mark behind a 38-16 composite record. Women's epee finished 5-1 (39-15 composite) while women's sabre went 4-2 (40-14). Women's foil went 3-3 (32-22), men's foil finished 2-4 (28-26), and men's sabre went 2-4 (18-35*).
Frank (Portland, Ore.) led the Bears with his 16-2 record in men's epee while senior Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) compiled a 14-4 mark in men's foil. Also in men's epee, sophomore Nathan Sinai (Merion Station, Pa.) and freshman Benjamin Ryjikov (Scarsdale, N.Y.) both tallied 11-7 records. Sophomore Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) paced men's sabre with a 9-5 mark.
In women's epee, sophomore Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) notched a 13-2 record, and sophomore Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.) went 11-4. Sophomore Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) paced women's sabre with a 12-3 record while junior Sabrina Edelman (New York, N.Y.) and junior Jenny Fu (Beijing, China) supported her in the weapon with 10-2 and 10-5 marks respectively. In women's foil, sophomore Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) and freshman Anna Susini (Lexington, Ky.) posted 11-4 and 10-5 records apiece.
Next, Brown competes at the Ivy League Fencing Round-Robins from Feb. 9-10 at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
