
Men’s Swimming & Diving Breaks Three Program Records on Second Day of the Ivy League Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team broke three school records on the second day of Ivy League Championships on Thursday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The Bears set programs marks in the 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.
"Today was another solid day for Brown men's swimming & diving," said head coach Chris Ip. "We have had six swimming events so far in the meet and our team has broken a school record in every event except for one (500 freestyle). We hope to capitalize on this momentum into tomorrow's prelims."
After day two of competition, the Bears sit in sixth place with 291.50 points while Harvard (525.50) and Penn (384) hold onto the top-two spots.
To open the night in the 500 freestyle, sophomore Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) swam to a lifetime best time of 4:26.14 to qualify 15th for finals. He went on to place 15th in the event at finals. Lincoln's preliminary swim was good enough for third all-time in program history. Sophomore Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) swam to a lifetime best time of 4:27.85, which came in at ninth in Brown history. He qualified 21st in prelims and placed 24th in finals. Freshman Nico Ortega (Caracas, Venezuela/Westport, Conn.) swam to a 4:31.10, good enough for 32nd overall.
Next, in the 200 IM junior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) broke the school record in both prelims and finals (1:45.11) to place fifth in the event for the Bears. Freshman Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) swam to a personal best time of 1:48.53 in prelims before posting a 1:48.57 in finals to take 20th. Arwood's preliminary performance puts him fifth all time in the Brown record book. Sophomore Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) swam to a 1:48.83 in prelims before placing 21st in finals with a 1:49.06 at night. His preliminary swim puts him sixth all-time in program history. Sophomore Max Pokutta (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed 26th in the event with a personal best time of 1:49.81, good enough for 10th in all-time at Brown.
Junior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) placed second in the 50 freestyle for the Bears with a 19.50, breaking the program record by over a quarter of a second and smashing his personal best time. Junior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) tied for 11th in the finals with a 20.15. His preliminary swim of 20.07 is good enough for fourth in team history and was a lifetime best. Senior Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) moved up to seventh all time in program history with a 20.18, good enough for 13th in the event and a new lifetime best. Freshman Lucas Hess' (Salt Lake City, Utah) 20.49 at finals placed him 18th overall in the event, and moved him into 14th all time in program history. It was also a lifetime best. Junior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) placed 23rd overall in the event with a 20.61 after posting a 20.57 in the preliminary heats. Senior Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) swam to a lifetime best time of 21.02 to place 28th in the preliminary heats.
On the boards, junior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) led the Bears on the 1-meter placing 14th with a score of 236.35. Freshman Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) placed 21st in the event with a 217.30 and sophomore Ivan Ip (Rosemead, Calif.) dove to a 24th place finish with a 200.70.
To close the night, the 200 freestyle relay team of Cline, junior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.), Sullivan and Smilenov placed second overall in the event and broke the school record by almost two seconds with a 1:17.81. Cline led the relay off in a new school record time of 19.46, lowering his program record set earlier in the session. The relay time was just .40 of a second off of the NCAA "A" cut time.
The Bears will have their third day of competition at Ivy League Championship tomorrow (March 1) with prelims starting at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 1000 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving consolations finals and the 400 medley relay starting at 6:04 p.m.
With his second-place finish in the 50 freestyle, Cline earned Second Team All-Ivy honors. Cline, along with Sung, Sullivan and Smilenov also picked up Second Team accolades with their second-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.
