PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball opens its 2019 campaign at the District Classic hosted by Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., as the Bears square off against St. Joseph's (Mar. 1, 1:00 p.m.), Georgetown (Mar. 1, 3:00 p.m.), St. Joseph's (Mar. 2, 10:00 a.m.), Howard (Mar. 2, 3:00 p.m.), and Bucknell (Mar. 3, 10:00 a.m.) at Washington Nationals Youth Academy.

BLANCHARD ALL-IVY
Junior Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy last spring after ranking fourth on the team with a .297 batting average and 16 RBIs. She hit .286 with four doubles and 10 RBIs in Ivy play in 2018.
OKIMOTO AT SHORT
Junior Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) has started all 84 games at shortstop over the last two years. Last season, she led the team in runs (21) and ranked third on the team in hits (36) and doubles (six). As a freshman, she paced the club in runs (33), walks (22), and on-base percentage (.423). For her career, she has posted a .305 batting average and .397 on-base percentage.
WATERS IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) emerged as one of the Bears' top pitchers last spring, appearing in 24 games with 11 starts in the circle. In Ivy play in 2018, she registered a 3.62 ERA, 3-3 record, and two complete games over 67.2 innings. As a sophomore, she earned the team's Most Improved Player award.
IN HER SEITZ
One of the Bears' top hitters over the last two seasons, senior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) has posted a batting average above .300 and notched over 20 RBIs in each of the last two years. Last season, she led the team in runs (21) and doubles (10), while ranking second in batting average (.352), on-base percentage (.421), slugging percentage (.537), hits (38), and RBIs (21).
SCHMITZ STEPS IN
Sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) started all 39 games for the Bears at second base a year ago, posting a .288 batting average, .359 on-base percentage, and .347 slugging percentage. She captured Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Feb. 26 and won the team's Most Outstanding First-Year Award.
VENEGAS A VETERAN
Senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) returns for her fourth season with the Bears after setting career highs in batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.333), and slugging percentage (.344). She enters the 2019 season having played in 107 career games with 96 career starts.
LOTZ OF EFFORT
Senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) has missed portions of each of the last two seasons due to injury but as a rookie she ranked second in the Ivy League in doubles (13), while recording a .316 batting average, 43 hits, 25 RBIs, and 17 runs.
PITCHING WITH GRACE
Sophomore Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) acted as an effective relief pitcher for the Bears last spring. She earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Apr. 30 and posted a 2.57 ERA on the year over 32.2 innings and 20 appearances.
THE CAPTAINS
Senior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.), junior Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.), and sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) will serve the Bears as captains during the 2019 season. Wimmer will act as a captain for the club for the second straight season.
THE NEWCOMERS
Brown welcomes five first-year student-athletes to the program: Madeline Charles (Fillmore, Calif.), Kat Clum (Fort Worth, Texas), Ivy Hobson (Los Angeles, Calif.), Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.), and Elayna Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.).
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
St. Joseph's brings a 4-1 record into the weekend, coming off the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Classic where the Hawks earned wins over Providence, Stetson, Bethune-Cookman, and Iowa. Host Georgetown carries a 3-11 mark into the weekend, having already played in three tournaments. The Hoyas went 1-4 last weekend at the Madeira Beach Tournament. Howard enters the weekend with a 3-11 record, coming off a 1-4 weekend at the ASU Black & Gold Tournament. Bucknell brings a 4-5 record into the weekend after going 3-1 at the Liberty Softball Challenge.

After playing in the District Classic, Brown heads to Greensboro, N.C., for the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational from Mar. 8-10, competing against Rider (Mar. 8, 9:30 a.m.), N.C. A&T (Mar. 8, 2:30 p.m.), Alabama A&M (Mar. 9, 2:30 p.m.), and Rider (Mar. 10, 9:30 a.m.).
