
Women’s Water Polo Beats Mercyhurst, 14-3, George Washington, 12-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Bears completed a 4-0 weekend at the Marist Invitational as Brown University women's water polo extended its winning streak to nine games with wins over Mercyhurst University, 14-3, and George Washington University, 12-7, on Sunday at the McCann Center.
The Bears (10-2) gained an 8-0 lead to open the game in their victory over the Lakers (1-6) in their first match of the day before using a 6-0 run against the Colonials (3-3) to turn a 5-5 tie in the third quarter into an 11-5 edge in the fourth.
"It was great to get four wins this weekend," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "We did a lot of good things this weekend, but we know that we have new challenges ahead of us as we begin conference play at Harvard on Friday."
Sophomore Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) led Brown with five goals on the day as 12 different Bears scored goals. Against Mercyhurst, freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) posted a hat trick and junior goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 11 saves. Over its last seven games, the Brown defense has allowed just 4.4 goals per game.
Next, Brown opens CWPA play at No. 16 Harvard on Friday, Mar. 1 at 7:30 p.m. before competing in three games at the Harvard Invitational – against No. 11 UC Davis (Mar. 2, 11:45 a.m.), No. 24 Cal Baptist (Mar. 2, 6:00 p.m.), and Gannon (Mar. 3, 11:45 a.m.).
Game 1 – Brown 14, Mercyhurst 3
Sophomore Lily Keck and freshman Dagmara Czajka each scored three goals as Brown topped Mercyhurst, 14-3, on Sunday morning in its first game of the day and third contest overall at the Marist Invitational.
The Bears opened up the game with an 8-0 lead en route to the victory over the Lakers.
Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) added three steals to her hat trick while Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) tacked on two steals to her three goals. Senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) totaled two goals, three assists, three steals, and three ejections drawn.
Freshman Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) posted a goal and an assist, and sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) notched a goal and two ejections drawn.
Seniors Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) and sophomores Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) scored one goal apiece while sophomore Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) dished out three assists.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 11 saves alongside an assist.
The Bears took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter behind goals from Rosas, Czajka, and Cook. Brown extended its edge to 8-0 late in the second quarter with a trio of goals from Keck and markers from Czajka and Miller. Mercyhurst scored right before the half to pull within 8-1 at the break.
After the Lakers came within 9-3 in the third quarter despite a goal from Miller, the Bears closed the game on a 5-0 run. Klein and Hughes netted goals in the third period before Perez, McDougal, and Czajka registered the final frame's only three goals.

With the score tied at 5-5 with 6:31 remaining in the third quarter, the Bears responded with a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead with 3:11 left in the fourth frame. Brown outscored GW 8-3 in the second half after the two teams stood tied at 4-4 at the break.
Akin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tallied two assists and two ejections drawn alongside her two goals while Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) added three steals to her pair of goals. Sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) posted a goal and two assists, and junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) totaled a goal and an assist.

Schaum put Brown up 5-4 early in the third period prior to another equalizer from GW at the 6:15 mark of the stanza. The Bears then used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 11-5 with 3:11 remaining in the contest.
Keck, McDougal, and Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) started the run with the final three goals of the third quarter. To begin the fourth frame, Perez, Klein, and Akin all found the back of the net to stake the Bears to their 11-5 edge. GW tacked on two goals with under 90 seconds to play before Hughes concluded the scoring with three seconds to go.
