
Women’s Water Polo Defeats Iona, 12-4, St. Francis Brooklyn, 16-5

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Brown University women's water polo extended its winning streak to seven games with victories over Iona College, 12-4, and St. Francis College Brooklyn, 16-5, at the Marist Invitational on Saturday at the McCann Center.
The Bears (8-2) beat the Gaels (5-8) in their first game of the day behind a 6-0 run to close the game and took an 8-0 lead at halftime on their way to the victory over the Terriers (1-5). Brown has allowed no more than five goals in any of its last five games and beat both teams for the second time this year.
"We picked up two solid wins today," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "Our defense continues to perform well, and that will be a key to our success throughout the season. Now we have to start getting ready for Mercyhurst and George Washington tomorrow."
A total of 12 different Bears scored goals on the day with sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) leading the team with four goals. Between the two games, seniors Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) and McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) and freshmen Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) and Isabel Riches (Lagauna Beach, Calif.) each netted three goals.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 11 saves against Iona, and freshman goalie Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) stopped 11 shots vs. St. Francis.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Marist Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 24, against Mercyhurst (8:15 a.m.), and George Washington (2:15 p.m.).

Senior Carmen Rosas and sophomore Carissa Perez each scored three goals to lead Brown to a 12-4 win over Iona College on Saturday morning in its first game at the Marist Invitational.
Holding a 6-4 lead midway through the third quarter, the Bears closed the game on a 6-0 run, shutting out the Gaels in the fourth quarter. Brown topped Iona for the second time this season after the Bears beat Iona, 15-3, on Feb. 9.
Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) and Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) paced the Brown offense with their hat tricks while Perez dished out three assists. Freshmen Lili Akin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) each netted two goals.
Junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) totaled a goal, an assist, two field blocks and two ejections draw while senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) finished with a goal and two steals. Freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) tallied three assists and two steals, and senior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) registered four steals.

Brown opened the game with a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter behind goals from Klein, Perez, and Atwell. Iona netted the second stanza's only goal as the Bears remained ahead 3-2 at the intermission.
In the third quarter a pair of goals from Rosas and a tally from Akin kept Brown in the lead, 6-3. After Iona pulled within 6-4, Brown closed the period on a 3-0 run behind goals from Akin, Klein, and Miller, taking a 9-4 advantage into the final frame.
The Bears notched the fourth quarter's only three goals with Rosas converting once and Perez finding the back of the net twice.

Riches (Laguna Beach, Calif.) paced the Brown offense with her hat trick alongside two assists and four steals. Senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) totaled two goals, two assists, and three steals.
