Bears edged in game two, 5-4, in 10 innings
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Brown baseball team pushed No. 8 Louisville to extra innings in the second game, but the Bears dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Cardinals, 7-0 and 5-4, to open the season and a three-game set Friday at Patterson Stadium.
Â
Brown moved to 0-2 on the young season while Louisville improved to 4-2 overall.
Â
Game 1 - Louisville 7, Brown 0
Colin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) allowed just one earned run over five innings as the starter, adding one strikeout with a pair of walks, while Reid Detmers tossed seven frames of hitless ball to pick up the win for the Cardinals. Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) added two innings of relief work out of the bullpen before Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) wrapped up the final frame.
Â
Louisville jumped on the board with one run in the first, scoring on a wild pitch, and then added another tally in the third on a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on one Brown error before Tyler Fitzgerald hit a two-run single in the sixth.
Â
The Bears had base runners in three of the final four innings, including a single by Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) in the ninth, but the Cardinals kept the visitors off the board for the shutout win.
Â
"While the results certainly weren't there, our hitters did a great job of competing and adjusting throughout the game," said head coach Grant Achilles. "There's a reason why Detmers in the ace for the eighth-ranked team in the country, and he showed why today."
Â
Game 2 – Louisville 5, Brown 4 (10 Inn.)
Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) had two hits apiece in the second game, while Lomuscio also drove in one run. Brown outhit the Cardinals, 8-5. Justin Lavey won the game for the Cardinals with a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Â
Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) allowed three runs over four innings as the starter and Joshua Wilder (San Marcos, Texas) was handed the loss in relief, giving up one run over 1.2 innings of work. Seniors Bobby Leyman (North Hampton, N.H.) and JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) tossed one scoreless frame apiece out of the bullpen. Jared Poland earned the win for the Cardinals in relief.
Â
"Our emphasis was competing and concentrating every pitch of the game, and we had them on the ropes for ten innings," said Achilles. "We had several opportunities that slipped away, and Louisville capitalized offensively on what we gave them. We need to execute better when in position to put the game away."
Â
Brown struck first in the second when Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) led off with back-to-back singles. Elliot Ginns (Chevy Chase, Md.) then drove home Phillips with a two-out single to center field. Louisville answered back in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to even the score.
Â
After Louisville gained a one-run lead in the third, the Bears battled back with three runs in the fifth, as Dalton Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) singled and then scored from first on Lomuscio's double down the left field line. Ciufo drove in Homza on a fielder's choice later in the inning and Delano crossed the plate on an error during the same play for the two-run lead.Â
Â
Louisville scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, as both bullpens settled in for scoreless ball over the next three frames to force extra innings. The Bears drew two walks in the top of the tenth, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run, before Lavey ended the game with a two-out single in the bottom half.
Â
Brown will wrap up the three-game series at Louisville Saturday at 2 PM.
