
Women’s Lacrosse Travels to Iona on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team will travel to Iona for a Saturday match-up starting at 2:00 p.m. at Mazzella Field. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

BEAR LEADERS
Sophomore Risa Mosenthal leads the Bears in both goals and points with 14 goals and two assists on the year for 16 points. Senior Hafsa Moinuddin ranks second in the scoring column with five goals and two assists. Defensively, junior Emily Fryer has a team-best four caused turnovers while three players have three apiece. Senior Caroline Zaffino leads Brown in draw controls with 10. In goal, Erin Tucker has started both games and has put together a 11.65 goals-against average and a .395 save percentage.
LAST TIME OUT
After a 16-9 season-opening win over Quinnipiac on Feb. 16, the Bears were defeated in overtime, 15-14, on Tuesday at Ohio State. Risa Mosenthal again paced Brown in scoring with six goals and two assists while senior Hafsa Moinuddin (2G, 1A), freshman Claire Jeschke (2G), junior Emma DeGennaro (2G) and sophomore Maggie Fowler (1G, 1A) added multipoint efforts.
ALL-TIME VS. IONA
The Bears and Gaels have met five times with Brown holding a 5-0 advantage in the series that started in 2014. The two teams played last season with the Bears coming away with a 10-6 victory at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Senior Caroline Zaffino and sophomore Risa Mosenthal both led the Bears in the 2018 matchup with four goals apiece.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
Iona is 0-4 on the season with losses to Army (18-8, Feb. 9), Wagner (14-4, Feb. 13), Drexel (11-7, Feb. 16) and Lafayette (14-6, Feb. 19). Leah Marshall leads the team in goals (6) and points (7) while Libby Miller paces the team in assists with three on the year. Shannon McCaffrey has started all four of the team's games in net and has a 16.62 goals-against average and a .438 save percentage.
MOSENTHAL NAMED IVY LEAGUE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Risa Mosenthal was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday in an announcement by the conference office. Mosenthal helped the Bears open the season with a 16-9 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday, Feb. 16 with a career-high eight goals, which tied the program record originally set by Anne Marie Van Hengel '84 in the 1983 campaign. The attack netted five goals in the first half and added three in the second. She was a perfect 3-for-3 on free position shots and also added four draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover.
PRESEASON POLL
The Bears were picked fifth in the Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Preseason Media Poll, released by the conference on Feb. 7. Defending league champion Princeton took the top spot in the poll with 12 first-place votes and 124 total points. Penn followed in second with four first-place votes and 115 total points while Dartmouth (96 points) and Cornell (68 points) rounded out the top half of the poll. Brown (50), Harvard (47), Columbia (42) and Yale (34) filled out the remainder in the fifth through eighth slots, respectively.

Brown added 11 players to its 2019 roster. The freshmen include: midfielder Jordan Torres (Andover, Mass.), midfielder/attack Michaella McCarthy (Portsmouth, N.H.), midfielder Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), midfielder Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.), attack Julia Kavan (Garden City, N.Y.), midfielder Casey Hearns (Commack, N.Y.), midfielder Kelsey Shea (Vienna, Va.), attack Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.), attack Emily Marciano (Clifton, Va.), goalie Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) and midfielder Erin Schafer (Pleasanton, Calif.).
