
Women’s Lacrosse Topples Iona, 14-6

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated Iona, 14-6, on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. After the game was tied 2-2 early on, the Bears never looked back and went on a four-goal run to take a 6-2 lead en route to their victory.
"It was great to finish the game strongly against an aggressive and well coach Iona team," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We are excited to get to work this week."
Brown jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first half which was aided by a 20-9 advantage in shots and heavy 11-2 lead in draw controls.
Freshmen Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) (27:59) Kelsey Shea (Vienna, Va.) (21:43) provided the first two goals of the game before Iona knotted the contest 2-2. The Bears then scored four-straight, with Shea adding her second at 9:58 and sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) providing the last goal of the run at 6:13 on a free position shot.
The Gaels added one more score before the Bears closed with three-consecutive tallies from sophomore Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (2:37), Mosenthal (2:05) and senior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) (1:23) for a score of 9-3.
Brown extended its lead to 14-3 with five-straight goals to open the second, which included two from Fowler (14:12, 9:22) to give her a hat trick.
Iona concluded the game with three goals, the first two from Christine Gironda at 8:09 and 3:18.
Brown again held the shot advantage in the second at 19-10 to have a 39-19 lead overall. Draws were in favor of the Bears as well at 7-2, to give them a commanding 18-4 lead overall.
Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) ended the game with 10 saves for the Bears, tying her career-high, while sophomore Cait Barrett (East Windsor, N.J.) and junior Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) also saw time in between the pipes. Shannon McCaffrey concluded the afternoon with 10 saves herself for Iona.
Six Bears recorded multiple points, with Fowler leading the way with three goals and three assists for a career-high six points, while eight total players registered a point. Zaffino tied her career high of 10 draw controls while adding two goals and an assist. Sophomore Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) led the defense, notching a career-best five caused turnovers.
The Bears next open Ivy League play on the road at Dartmouth on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m.
