
Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes, Global Sport Community Fellows Earn Words Unlimited Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University Director of Athletics Jack Hayes and Brown's 2018 cohort of Global Sport Community Fellows – as well as former Brown coaches Phil Pincince and Norma Taylor – have earned awards from Words Unlimited, the statewide organization of sportswriters, sportscasters, and sports publicists announced on Friday.
Hayes won the organization's Frank Lanning Achievement Award while the Bears' Global Sport Community Fellows from the summer of 2018 won the group's Community Service Award. Pincince – Brown's women's soccer coach from 1977-2015 – garnered Schoolgirl Coach of the Year honors with Mt. St. Charles girls' soccer, and Taylor – Brown's women's tennis coach from 1986-2004 – gained the Bill Cawley Achievement Award.
Frank Lanning Achievement Award: Jack Hayes, Brown Athletic Director:
A three-sport student-athlete at Providence Country Day and a three-year starter in lacrosse at Providence College in the 1980s, the Rhode Island native has enjoyed a successful administrative career in intercollegiate athletics, serving as Brown University's Director of Athletics since 2012 after previous stints at Fairfield, St. John's, Fordham and the University of Connecticut.
Community Service Award: Brown Global Sport Community Fellows
Last summer, 10 Brown University student-athletes worked with seven Providence community partners in six neighborhoods to build sustainable sport opportunities for children aged 6-12, providing offerings in basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, baseball, swimming, water polo, and soccer as part of Global Sport Community Fellowships run through Brown's Swearer Center.
Schoolgirl Coach of the Year: Phil Pincince, Mt. St. Charles Girls' Soccer:
Coaching his first high school season at Mount after 39 years at the helm of the Brown University women's soccer program, Pincince led the sixth-seeded Mounties to their first Division II Championship, as they rallied from behind to upset previously-unbeaten Pilgrim in a shootout.
Bill Cawley Achievement Award: Norma Taylor, Tennis Hall of Famer:
Inducted into the United States Professional Tennis Association New England, USTA New England, and Rogers High School Athletic Halls of Fame, the Newport native's playing and coaching career spans many decades and includes 19 years at Brown, where she guided the Bears to their only two Ivy League Championships (1991 and 1997), as well as the 1989 and 1996 ECAC Championships.

Words Unlimited will hold its 73rd annual Sports Awards Banquet on Sunday, March 10 at the Cranston Country Club, 69 Burlingame Rd, Cranston R.I. Reception will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.
