
Men’s Swimming & Diving Sets Two School Records on Day One of Big Al Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team opened the Big Al Open by setting two school records on Friday night at DeNunzio Pool. Junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) broke the school mark in the 500 freestyle while the Bears also set the 400 medley relay school record.
The Bears are in third place after the first day of competition with 223 points while Princeton (256.5) holds the lead and Denver follows in second (224).
A team of senior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.), senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.), senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) and senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) began the night's finals in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing third in 1:19.27.
Lincoln next broke the Brown record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:22.60 to finish fourth in the A-Final. His time bested the previous record of 4:24.49 set by Cory Mayfield in 2013. Freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) also competed in the top final and turned in a sixth-place finish (4:26.22). Freshman Tyler Lu (Pleasanton, Calif.) (4:29.02, fourth) and sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) (4:30.98, seventh) picked up points in the B-Final of the event.
Sullivan claimed second in the A-Final of the 200 IM with a time of 1:45.32. Junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) also added a strong finish in seventh overall (1:48.95). Freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas) next led the Bears in the B-Final in third (1:48.99).
Cline was Brown's top finisher in the 50 freestyle with a seventh-place showing in the A-Final (19.94) while Smilenov won the B-Final in 20.19.
In diving, sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) scored a 276.95 in the 1M for seventh place.
The night closed with another school record for the Bears with Sung, Sullivan, sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) and Cline swimming to a time of 3:13.10 and third place. The quartet beat the previous time of 3:13.24 set by Sullivan, Max Pokutta, Nicholas Brown and Cline last season.
The Bears will compete in day two of the Big Al Open tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 7), starting with prelims at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m.
