
Men’s Swimming & Diving Breaks Two More School Records at Big Al Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team moved up to second place and set two more school records on day two of the Big Al Open on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool. The Bears (522.5) trail only host Princeton (547.5) in the invite.
A quartet of sophomore Billy Knaul (Sudbury, Mass.), freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas), senior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) and senior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) finished seventh (1:29.77) in the 200 medley relay to open the night finals.
Sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) followed in the 400 IM, coming in fifth place with a time of 3:50.60. Both his final and prelim time (3:50.36) bested the previous school mark of 3:50.61 set by junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) last season. Park and freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) also finished 7-8 in the A-Final with times of 3:53.08 and 3:53.17, respectively.
The 100 butterfly saw sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) (48.60, seventh) and senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) (48.94, eighth) compete in the A-Final while Stephens took second in the B-Final (48.75).
Brown had a strong showing in the 200 freestyle with junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) winning the A-Final in 1:35.69 and Cline coming in second in 1:36.64. Senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) also finished in the top race, placing sixth (1:37.76) while sophomore Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) recorded points in the B-Final (1:38.91, sixth).
Huang placed seventh in the A-Final of the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 55.16.
Senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) took second in the A-Final of the 100 backstroke with a time of 47.67 while Cline (49.41, seventh) and Sung (49.83, eighth) followed. Qiao (49.44, second) and Hess (49.74, fourth) placed in the B-Final of the event.
Sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) led the Bears in the 3M with a score of 309, good for sixth place. Senior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) also competed in the finals and posted a score of 232.35 (10th).
Brown ended the night by winning the 800 freestyle relay with Cline, Lincoln, Smilenov and Sullivan swimming to a school record time of 6:26.14 and beating second-place Princeton by almost two full seconds (6:28.13).
The Bears will conclude competition at the Big Al Open tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 8), starting with prelims at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m.
