PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's rugby team advanced to the championship game of the Tier II Division with a 23-15 victory over Queens on Saturday in the NIRA Semifinals at Marvel Field.
"This was quite a battle," said head coach Kathy Flores. "We didn't have the majority of possession but when we did have it we were able to convert it into points – thanks to some hard working forwards and hard running backs!"
The Bears received their scores from junior Lexi Nelson (Foxboro, Mass.), senior Abby O'Keefe (St. Louis, Mo.), freshman Mahdia Parker (Harlem, N.Y.) and freshman Kate Molloy (Sudbury, Mass.) while junior Olivia Duba (San Ramon, Calif.) converted a penalty kick.
Nelson opened the match by running for a try after a good sequence of backline play for a 5-0 Brown lead. The Royals responded by recording a try in the corner to tie the match, 5-5.
The Bears elected to go for posts after a penalty and Duba's kick was successful for an 8-5 advantage. O'Keefe increased Brown's lead (13-5) with a try with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Queens again had an answer to a Brown score and put in a try to cut its deficit to three (13-10). The Royals next took their first lead (15-13) of the afternoon on a long break from the halfway line to send them up at the midway mark.
After Queens held possession for a while to begin the second half, Duba won the ball back with an interception but the Bears lost the ball after an initial line break.
The Bears were finally able to punch one in as Parker scored for the sixth-consecutive match and gave the Bears an 18-15 lead. Molloy next touched down a try to give Brown some breathing room and a 23-15 advantage with five minutes left. From there, the Bears held off the Royals for the victory.
Brown will next compete in the NIRA Tier II Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 12:00 p.m., hosted by Harvard.
