PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Malcolm Johnson (Wilmington, Del.) and Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) both scored to lift the Brown men's soccer team over Dartmouth, 2-1, in Saturday's Ivy League match at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown wraps up the season at 4-9-4, 2-2-3. Dartmouth moves to 6-8-2, 3-3-1. Brown outshot the Big Green, 14-12.
"It was great to end the season with an Ivy win," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "There were some moments of good soccer and also the team exhibited a great desire tonight. Being able to come back and get a first goal was great with the second goal a total team effort. A huge thank you to our departing seniors."
Max Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) made four saves in net for the win, while Alex Budnik had two stops.
Zach Kalk opened the scoring when he converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to give Dartmouth the early lead.
Brown evened the score, however, as Johnson scored with 22 seconds left in the first half. Alex Mina (Aldie, Va.) sent a cross into the box that was blocked, before Johnson launched a shot that deflected off a defender and into the net for his second goal of the season.
Waldau made three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The Bears gained the lead in the 79th minute when Waleffe scored his third goal of the season. After Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) sent a service into the box, Waleffe redirected a shot from Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) past Budnik for the one-goal advantage.
Brown held the Big Green to without a shot during the final ten minutes of play to secure the victory.
Prior to the game, Brown honored seniors Zac Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.), Jackson Goebel (Houston, Texas), Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) , Austin Lind (North Kingstown, R.I.), Matt Rytel (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Chow and Schiller for their years of dedication to the program.
