Bastianelli Wins Pool to Lead Wrestling at the Northeast Collegiate Classic

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Nino Bastianelli won his pool at 197 pounds, and five other Bears registered second-place pool finishes as Brown University wrestling competed at the Journeymen Northeast Collegiate Classic on Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College in its season opener.

Competing for the first time in 2019-20, the Bears totaled 27 wins, including 13 bonus-point wins behind six falls, five major decisions, and two technical falls. In pool competition, Brown posted nine top-three finishers with one champion, five second-place finishers, and three third-place finishers.

"I'm really happy with the way we competed today," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "It was a great first test to see what areas we can continue to improve upon before our next competition at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Maryland."

Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) paced Brown with a 3-0 record – including a pin – for first place in pool C at 197 pounds. He defeated opponents from The Citadel, Indiana, and Lehigh on his way to the pool title.

Senior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) came in second place in pool B at 125 pounds behind a 3-1 record, and freshman Ricky Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) finished in second with a 3-1 mark in pool C at 149 pounds.

Junior Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished in second in pool C at 133 pounds, senior Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) came in second in pool D at 141 pounds, and senior Matt Lattanze (Norristown, Pa.) placed second in pool D at 157 pounds. All three wrestlers posted records of 2-1.

Sophomores Reese Fry (Manchester, Mich.), Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.), and David Heath (North Canton, Ohio) placed third at 125 pounds (pool D), 157 pounds (pool C), and 184 pounds (pool C) respectively. Each wrestler notched a mark of 2-1.

Freshman Darby Diedrich (Howell, N.J.) finished in fourth in pool D at 133 pounds with a 2-1 record, sophomore Samuel Lynch (Foster, R.I.) came in fourth in pool E at 141 pounds with a 2-2 mark, senior Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.) placed fourth in pool B at 149 pounds behind a 1-2 record, and sophomore Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) came in fifth in pool C at 174 pounds with a 1-2 mark.

Bastianelli, Fry, Lynch, Pawelski, Bokina, and Lattanze each registered one fall on the day.

Next, Brown will compete at the Navy Classic on Saturday, November 23 in Annapolis, Md., at the Wesley Brown Field House.
