WASHINGTON, D.C. – Juniors Nino Bastianelli and Charlie Faber both posted technical fall victories, but Brown University wrestling came up just short at American University, 18-16, in its dual meet season opener on Friday night at Bender Arena.
Â
Competing in their first EIWA dual of the year, the Bears (0-1, 0-1 EIWA) trimmed an early 6-0 deficit down to 12-11 before the host Eagles (1-3, 1-1 EIWA) held on for the win.
Â
"We wrestled hard tonight and competed well for our first dual of the season," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We did not give up any bonus points and had two bonus-point wins of our own. We can certainly build off this as we get ready to face George Mason tomorrow."
Â
Four Bears earned victories on the night. Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) tallied his 10th win of the season and second technical fall of the year while Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) notched his eighth overall win and first technical fall. Sophomore Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.) compiled his 12th win of the year, and sophomore Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) improved to 4-1 on the season.
Â
After the Bears dropped decisions at 141 and 149 pounds to open the match, Bokina stopped the run with a 6-0 shutout win over Elijah Murphy at 157 pounds. Holding a 1-0 lead entering the third period, Bokina scored a 4-point near fall and added a point for riding time to seal the victory.
Â
Rogers kept Brown within 9-6 in the team score behind a 12-6 win over Ben Root at 174 pounds. Trailing 3-2 after the first period, Rogers outscored Root 5-0 in the second period and 5-3 in the third stanza on his way to the win.
Â
Bastianelli sliced the margin of the team score to 12-11 with a 23-8 technical fall over Will Jarrell at 197 pounds. Bastianelli totaled seven takedowns, two reversals, and a 4-point near fall as part of his bonus-point triumph, including five takedowns and a reversal in the second period.
Â
At 133 pounds, Faber closed the match with an 18-2 technical fall over Daniel Kidd. Faber jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the first period and added 10 points in the third period behind a reversal and eight near fall points.
Â
All six of the Bears' defeats in the match came via decision with a pair of Bears challenging ranked opponents. Freshman Ricky Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 9 Kizhan Clarke at 149 pounds, and sophomore Brandon Kui (Wayne, N.J.) came within 4-1 against No. 18 Tanner Harvey at 184 pounds.
Â
Next, Brown competes at George Mason University tomorrow – Saturday, Jan. 11 – at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
