Field Hockey Heads to Cornell and Quinnipiac

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey team hits the road for its next two contests, playing at Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 26 (11:30 a.m.) and at Quinnipiac on Sunday, Oct. 27 (1:00 p.m.).

THE BEARS
Sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar leads the team in points with 18 on seven goals and four assist. Van Rootselaar saw her five-game point streak come to a close Saturday, in which she scored 15 points in that span (6G, 3A). She currently ranks fourth in the conference in points, averaging 1.38 per game. Senior Gina Openshaw ranks second in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points. The Annapolis, Md. native is tied for 13th all-time at Brown with 19 career goals. Freshman Calista Manuzza has started seven games in the cage while fellow rookie Jodie Brine has started one contest while appearing in six. Brine recorded her first collegiate shutout last week with nine saves in a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross and leads the goalkeepers with a 2.12 goals-against average and a .800 save percentage.
LAST TIME OUT
Brown went 1-1 last week with a 1-0 over Holy Cross on Wednesday and a 6-0 loss to No. 8 Princeton on Saturday. Freshman Jodie Brine recorded a collegiate-best nine saves and sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar scored the lone goal in the Bears' win against the Crusaders.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red are 8-5 this season and 2-2 in league play. Cornell broke into the Penn Monto/NFHCA National Coaches Poll on Oct. 8 at No. 24 but fell out of the rankings the following week after a 3-1 loss to Cal on Oct. 13. The Big Red most recently picked up a 4-0 win versus Lehigh on Wednesday. Cornell's Ivy wins have come against Columbia (1-0 SO, Oct. 5) and Yale (2-1, Oct. 12) with losses to Penn (5-2, Sept. 28) and No. 14 Harvard (2-0, Oct. 19). Grace Royer leads the Big Red in scoring with 15 points on five goals and five helpers. Claire Jones is also in double digits for scoring with 11 points (4G, 3A). In the cage, Maddie Henry has started 13 games and leads the squad with a 1.76 goals against average and a .758 save percentage while logging two shutouts.
ALL-TIME VS. CORNELL
Cornell has the series edge at 21-17-2. Brown won last season's meeting, 2-0, in Providence behind a pair of second-half goals, which included the game winner from sophomore Emma Rosen.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
Quinnipiac is 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the Big East this season. The Bobcats have lost seven straight, including a 3-2 shootout loss at No. 25 Providence (Oct. 18) and a 2-1 defeat versus Yale (Oct. 20) in their most recent action. Prior to hosting Brown on Sunday, Quinnipiac will play at No. 19 Old Dominion on Friday. Bianka Strubbe leads the team with six goals and two assists for 14 points while Julianna Cappello is second in scoring with three goals for six points. Goaltending duties have been shared between Hedda Biermann-Ratjen and Mack Vorel with 10 and five games started, respectively. Biermann-Ratjen leads the duo in goal-against average (2.56) while Vorel has the top save percentage (.745).
ALL-TIME VS. QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats hold the advantage in the all-time series at 6-2, winning the last five matchups. Quinnipiac took last year's game in Hamden, Conn., 6-1, on Sept. 16.
