
Women’s Swimming & Diving Topples Cornell, 230-72

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team cruised past Cornell, 230-72, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Prior to the meet, seniors Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Jill Glasser (Jacksonville, Fla.), Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.), Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.), Charlotte Rosenberg (Chicago, Ill.), Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.), Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) and Tiffany Zhao (Beaverton, Ore.) were honored for their contributions to the program in their four years.
Brown opened the day with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as freshman Maija Ninness (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Zhao, sophomore Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Salesky of the B Team swam to a time of 1:45.11. The A Team followed in second with the quartet of freshman Allyson Ty (North Andover, Mass.), freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.), freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) and junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) finishing in 1:45.25.
The Bears next went 2-3-4 in the 1000 freestyle with freshman Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) coming in second (10:24.40). She was followed by junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) in third (10:34.17) and freshman Michelle Guo (Falmouth, Mass.) in fourth (10:38.61).
Brown had a strong showing in the 200 freestyle and claimed the first three spots. Prendella captured the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.49, out touching sophomore Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) who came in second (1:51.54) and Karpowicz (1:53.64) in third. Seaman later won the 100 freestyle in 50.92 while Cross (52.15) and Salesky (52.22) went 2-3. Prendella also took first in the 500 freestyle (5:01.73) while Guo (5:04.52) and junior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) (5:05.41) followed in second and third, respectively.
Ninness was the Bears' top finisher in the 100 backstroke, placing second in 56.65. Sophomore Deanne Umbay (North Hills, Calif.) (57.18) and junior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) (57.20) followed in third and fourth, respectively. Freshman Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won the 200 of the event in 1:59.18 while Welch bumped up a spot to second (2:01.70) and Ty finished third (2:05.73).
Lukawski took both the 100 (1:05.16) and 200 breaststroke (2:20.41). Crawford (2:23.24) and freshman Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) (2:25.31) went 2-3 in the 200 while while Zhao placed third in the 100 (1:05.70).
Brown again took the top three spots, this time in both butterfly events. Wei won the 200 in 2:02.37 while freshman Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) (2:03.84) placed second and Rosenberg came in third (2:04.12). Nguyen won the 100 in 55.63 and was closely followed by Rosenberg (55.75) while Wei came in third (56.20).
The Bears went 1-2-3 in the 50 freestyle as Salesky took the crown with a time of 23.62. Sophomore Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (23.81) and Cross (24.16) followed.
In diving, sophomore Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) came in second in the 3M with a mark of 264.53 and freshman Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) (245.55, third) and junior Julia Benz (Superior, Colo.) (240.15, fourth) finished right after her. Feord came back to take the top spot in the 1M with a score of 260.78 while Benz (256.20) and Mitchell (253.50) rounded out the top three.
Takabayashi won the 200 IM in 2:04.87 and Nguyen took second (2:06.66). Whall also placed third in the event (2:09.30).
Brown capped off the meet with first and second place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay. Seaman, Salesky, Center and Cross won the race in 1:33.40 while Prendella, Wittmer, Welch and sophomore Claudia Wong (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in second (1:35.54).
The Bears will next compete at the Ivy League Championships Wednesday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 23 at DeNunzio Pool on the campus of Princeton.
