PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown University has hired Mitch Dalton as the next Mary Ann Lippitt Head Coaching Chair in Women's Swimming and Diving, Mencoff Vice President for Athletics and Recreation M. Grace Calhoun '92 announced Monday.
Dalton arrives after a highly successful six-year tenure at the University of Texas, where he most recently served as associate head coach. During his time in Austin, Dalton helped lead the Longhorns to top three finishes at the NCAA Championships in each of the last six seasons (2021-26), as well as two SEC titles and four Big 12 titles.
"Mitch's pedigree at both the elite collegiate and international levels makes him an exceptional fit to lead our women's swimming and diving program forward," Calhoun said. "He has a proven track record of developing champions in the pool and leaders outside of it. We could not be more excited to welcome Mitch to the Bears family."
"I'd like to thank Grace Calhoun for this opportunity," Dalton said. "At a time of uncertainty for Olympic sports, her vision, belief, and support for swimming and diving stand out. I am also grateful to Ray Grant for leading the search committee and for making me feel so supported in this move. It was clear from the outset that Brown cares about its student-athletes, its coaches, and its women's swimming and diving program. I can't wait to meet the team, speak with alumni, hit the recruiting trail, and get to work to return Brown to the top of the Ivy League.
Before joining the Longhorns in 2020, Dalton spent nearly five years as the National Junior Team Director for USA Swimming. In that role, he was responsible for identifying, supporting, and cultivating the next generation of U.S. Olympians. Under his leadership, Team USA captured first-place finishes at the 2015 and 2017 FINA World Junior Championships and the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships.
Dalton's extensive collegiate coaching resume also includes five seasons as an assistant coach for Princeton University's men's program. While there, he served as the recruiting coordinator and helped guide the Tigers to four Ivy League team titles and three NCAA appearances. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at George Washington University, where his efforts resulted in 16 new school records and three conference records.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Dalton was a four-year letter winner and senior captain at James Madison University, where he began his collegiate coaching career. He graduated from JMU in 2007 with a degree in English language and literature. He was recently accepted to Brown's Master's in Organizational Leadership program.
