PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team opened the Ivy League Championships on Wednesday night at Denunzio Pool with the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay.
"We had a solid night - one we will definitely be able to gain momentum from in the morning," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "I have to acknowledge our three freshmen leading off the 200 medley relay - it's a high pressure situation and all three put together best ever splits."
The Bears took sixth in the first relay, the 200 medley, with a time of 1:41.25 by freshman Allyson Ty (North Andover, Mass.), freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.), freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) and junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.). Yale captured first in the event in 1:38.24.
The 800 freestyle relay was next where sophomore Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.), senior Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.), junior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) and senior Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) put together a time of 7:16.70. Harvard claimed first, coming in with a time of 7:06.98.
With tonight's relays, Brown sits in sixth place with 98 points while Harvard and Yale are tied for the top spot with 120 points.
The Bears next compete in their first full day of the Ivy League Championship at DeNunzio Pool tomorrow (Feb. 21) with prelims beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1 meter diving and 200 freestyle relay starting at 6:04 p.m.
