
Men’s Swimming & Diving Bests Cornell, 164.5 – 136.5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team defeated Cornell, 164.5-136.5, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Prior to the meet, seniors Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.), Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.), Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.), Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Charles Steele (Katy, Texas) were honored for their contributions to the program in their four years.
"I was very happy with the strong effort our team put forth today and am proud of the way we positively honored our graduating senior class," said head coach Chris Ip. "Our senior leaders have left a tremendous legacy, and today they secured key points throughout the meet to put this team in a position to win. We will now prepare for the 2019 Ivy League Championships in our home pool at the end of next month. I am excited to watch our team's momentum carry us into the championship phase of the season."
Freshman Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) was the highest placing diver for Brown as he took home the 3-meter board victory with a score of 316.35 in front of junior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) who took third with a mark of 264.45. Labuda also went on to finish second on the 1-meter board (278.93).
Sophomore Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) took the Bears' first win of the meet, leading a 1-2-4 finish in the 200 freestyle. Lincoln's 1:38.88 was his fastest of the season. Hollowsky followed up with a key second place finish (1:39.34) and freshman Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) grabbed fourth (1:40.51). Lincoln also led the Bears in the 500 with his second place finish, another regular season best at 4:36.45.
Junior captain Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) took second in the 100 backstroke (50.33) and N. Brown tied for third (50.47). Freshman Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) took fifth in 51.50. Later in the meet, it was N. Brown taking the win in the 200 backstroke (1:48.93), with Sullivan and Arwood finishing behind him in third (1:49.85) and fourth (1:50.17).
Sophomore Max Pokutta (Palo Alto, Calif.) (56.70), junior Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) (57.63) and Christuk (57.80) took 3-4-5 in the 100 breaststroke. Pokutta would follow this effort up with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.20. Freshman Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) followed Pokutta with a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.71) and Takahashi took fourth (2:06.21).
Junior captain Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) again won both butterfly events. In the 200, Sung (1:49.48) teamed up with Hayes (1:49.96) and freshman I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) (1:50.80), who took second and fourth, respectively. Qiao (49.48) would go on to follow Sung (48.44) again in the 100, taking third, with junior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) placing fourth (50.06) in the event.
Junior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) won the 50 (20.00) and 100 (44.65) freestyle and led off the winning 200-freestule relay with a 19.98, his fastest time of the year. Steele took an important third in the 50 freestyle (20.91) and fourth (45.79) in the 100 freestyle behind both Cline and junior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) who finished second in the 100 freestyle (45.41).
Hayes won the final individual event of the meet, leading the way for the Bears in the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.46. Sophomore Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) completed the 1-2 finish in the event, coming in at 4:01.18.
The 200 freestyle relay of Cline, Sung, Sullivan, and Smilenov swam to victory in the last event of the meet with a time of 1:20.57 to seal the victory for Brown.
The Bears will have one final tune-up before the Ivy League Championships (Feb. 27-Mar. 2) and will next compete at the Boston Winter Open on Friday, Feb. 8 (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday, Feb. 9 (2:00 p.m.).
