Bears score three times in the third, Nieto makes 19 saves in shutout
TROY, N.Y. – Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) scored a pair of third-period goals and Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped all 19 shots he faced as the Brown men's hockey team blanked Rensselaer, 3-0, in ECAC action Friday night at Houston Field House.
Brown scored all three goals in the third period to move to 7-9-3 overall and 4-5-3 in the league. RPI dropped to 7-16-0, 4-8-0.
In addition to Beaudoin, Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) also scored for the Bears, while Jack Gessert (Novi, Mich.) had a pair of assists. Nieto earned his second career shutout and first of the season, while Owen Savory had 14 stops on the other end for the Engineers.
"I thought we responded, played a great third period and overall played good road hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "The guys found a way to win. They were very good in the third, very responsible and played with a lot of grit. Those are a big two points."
The two teams played a scoreless opening period with five shots apiece. Brady Ferner scored on a shot from the slot late in the period, but the goal was reversed after video review due to goalie interference.
Brown and RPI combined for five power plays in the second period but neither team was able to capitalize and gain the lead. Nieto made nine stops in the middle frame to keep the game scoreless, highlighted by back-to-back stops on Meirs Moore during a power play late in the period.
Beaudoin scored the first goal of the game at 6:56 in the third period. Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) sent a shot from the point and Beaudoin re-directed the puck into the net for his third tally of the season.
The Bears tacked on another goal just over two minutes later when Giuttari blasted home a wrist shot over the shoulder of Savory for his fifth score of the season. Gessert won the faceoff in the offensive end before the shot and picked up the assist on the play.
Beaudoin added an empty-net goal with four seconds remaining to secure the win. RPI outshot Brown overall, 19-17.
Brown will visit No. 16 Union tomorrow at 7 PM.
