
Gymnastics Wins All Four Events, Defeats SCSU in Home Opener, 192.850-189.625

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Mei Li Costa won the vault and bars titles, and seniors Cassidy Jung and Julia Green placed first on beam and floor respectively as Brown University gymnastics defeated Southern Connecticut University, 192.850 to 189.625, on Monday night in its home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"I'm really proud of the team for putting it all together tonight," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "It was exciting to be able to put on a great performance for our fans in our home opener."
Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) won the vault and bars titles for the second time in as many meets, scoring a 9.800 on both events. Jung (San Marino, Calif.) took first on beam with a career-high 9.850, and Green (Exton, Pa.) captured first on floor with a 9.825, tying her career best.
As a team, Brown scored season highs on bars (48.250), beam (48.625), and floor (47.800), while posting a 48.175 on vault. The Bears also recorded a season high in the overall team score.
Costa led the Bears on vault with a career-high 9.800 for first place while Green came in second place with a season-best 9.675. Sophomore Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) followed with a season-high 9.650. Sophomore Kate Nelson (Montara, Calif.) tied her career high with a 9.600, and freshman Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) and senior Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) each scored a 9.450.
On bars, Costa again led the field with a 9.800, and Nelson placed second with a 9.675. Sophomores Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Caroline Warren (Pawleys Island, S.C.), freshman Abby Walsh (White Lake, Mich.), and junior Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) all tallied season highs with a 9.625, 9.600, 9.550, and 9.525 respectively.
Jung paced the Bears on beam with her career-high 9.850 while sophomore Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) finished in second place with a 9.775. Petrillo posted a season-high 9.700, Hansen notched a season-best 9.675, and Green scored a season-high 9.625. Senior Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) added a 9.550.
Finishing on floor, Green matched her career high with a 9.825 for first place. Petrillo came in third with a season-best 9.700, Walsh tallied a 9.675, and Nelson tied her career high with a 9.600.
The meet was originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20 at 1:00 p.m. but was postponed to Monday due to inclement weather over the weekend.
Next, Brown hosts Bridgeport, Hamline, and Rhode Island College on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m. for the Bears' fifth annual "Rumble and Tumble" combined meet with the Brown wrestling program.
