KINGSTON, R.I. – Junior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored the lone goal of the game in the final minute of the second overtime period as the Brown men's soccer team topped Rhode Island, 1-0, on Saturday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
Brown (3-3) handed Rhode Island (6-1) its first loss of the season and snapped the team's six-game shutout streak. The Rams entered the week ranked 23rd in the latest Top Drawer Soccer national poll. Brown is now 2-0 in overtime games this season.
Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) recorded a career high six saves in net for his first career shutout. Roger Penske made five saves in the loss for the Rams.
The two teams were evenly matched in a scoreless first half, as the Bears held a slim advantage in shots, 7-6. Brown came out strong to start the second frame as Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) broke free for a good look but was turned away by Penske's diving stop.
Rhode Island and Brown were even at 11 shots apiece after 90 minutes of scoreless play to send the game into extra time.
The Rams had the first four shots through 19 minutes of overtime before Chow scored the game winner with 58 seconds remaining. Junior Zac Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) flicked a pass to the left side, where Chow travelled down to the end line and beat Penske for his first tally of the season, marking the first goal allowed by the Rams in 2018.
Rookie Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) and Schiller paced the Bears with four shots apiece. Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) had two shots on goal.
