IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine scored three goals in the first half as the Brown men's soccer team fell to the Anteaters on the road, 3-0, in Sunday's non-conference matchup at Anteater Stadium.
Brown moved to 2-3 on the season and UC Irvine improved to 5-2-1 overall.
Rookie James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) took the loss for the Bears in 45 minutes of work, before giving way to Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia), who made two saves in the second half. Greg Patenaude made four saves to pick up the shutout for the Anteaters.
Irvine scored two goals in the opening ten minutes of the game, starting at 5:40 when Ivan Canales put the Anteaters on the board. Canales then assisted in a goal by Jose Ortiz less than three minutes later to give the home side the two-goal advantage.
Alvaro Quezada added another goal in the 33rd minute to put Irvine on top, 3-0. Brown's Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) responded with a shot on target, but Patenaude turned away the attempt to preserve the three-goal lead at halftime.
The Bears had five shots in the second half, including a pair on target by Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Chow, but neither could beat Patenaude as Irvine held on for the shutout. The two teams registered three corner kicks apiece in the second half.
Chow paced the Bears with two shots on goal. Rookie Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) and D'Andrea also posted two overall shots apiece.
