Providence, R.I. - Brown men's lacrosse head coach Mike Daly has completed his coaching staff for the 2018-19 season, naming former Siena head coach John Svecand former Trinity head coach Mike Higgins to the Bears' coaching staff as assistant coaches.
"We are thrilled to announce the addition of John Svec and Mike Higgins to our lacrosse staff and the Brown Lacrosse Family," said Daly. "They both bring a wealth of experience and professionalism to our program and we are excited to continue to build our program with these two quality men."
Svec was the head coach at Siena from 2012-2018 and a two-time MAAC Coach of the Year (2012, 2014). He guided the Saints to the program's third MAAC Championship in 2014.
Svec posted a 24-18 mark in MAAC play in seven seasons, leading the Saints to the MAAC Championship game in each of his first three years as well as a pair of regular season titles (2012, 2014). He was appointed to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Rules Committee in July of 2014.
His 2017 team ranked fourth nationally in man-up offense (.515) and had the 11th fewest turnovers per game (11.71). In 2016, Svec's program ranked third nationally in clearing percentage (.913).
Svec guided the Saints to the program's third MAAC Championship in six seasons in 2014 and was named the MAAC Coach of the Year. Siena posted an 11-6 overall record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in the MAAC. He guided the Saints to the NCAA Play-in Game where Siena dropped a hard fought 9-8 decision on the road against a Bryant squad that ultimately advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
In 2013 Svec led the Saints back to the MAAC Championship Game for a second consecutive season. Svec guided the Saints to the program's first-ever win over a USILA Top-10 opponent when Siena upset 10th ranked Albany, 10-9.
Svec came to Siena following a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Hobart College in the powerful ECAC Lacrosse League. During his tenure with the Statesmen, Svec coached six All-ECAC selections and two USILA North/South All-Stars. He served as defensive coordinator at Hobart, and his corps ranked 11th nationally in scoring defense in 2009.
Prior to his stint at Hobart, Svec had a proven track record in the Capital Region where he was one of the key architects to Albany's rise to power. He served as an assistant coach with the Great Danes from 2001-08, helping guide the program to a 70-43 (.619) record and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
A native of Arnold, MD, Svec earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Loyola College (Md.) in 2001. A defenseman for the Greyhounds, Svec participated in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Loyola posted an impressive 46-10 (.821) overall record during his playing career and advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 1998.
He is married to the former Lindsey Hart, who served as an assistant coach at Siena for five years and previously served as head women's lacrosse coach at Albany from 2006-10. Svec and Lindsey have a son, Luke.
Higginswas the head coach at Trinity for seven seasons guiding the Bantams to unprecedented success. In Higgins' rookie season, Trinity posted its highest-ever win total with a 12-4 record and made its first appearance in the NESCAC Final Four. In 2012, the Bantams posted an 11-7 mark, returned to the NESCAC Semifinals, and earned the program's first bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Trinity downed Eastern Connecticut, 13-9, for the first NCAA win in team history, before falling to Tufts in the NCAA Second Round.
Higgins was the 2011 NESCAC Coach of the Year and the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Coach of the Year. He coached six All Americans during his tenure.
Higgins was the defensive coordinator at Tufts from 2005-2008. He coached nine All-NESCAC selections and two All-Americans while coaching the Jumbo defense, and helped guide Tufts to a 54-26 record in his five seasons and to the NCAA Division III Championship Second Round in 2007. Higgins also has head coaching experience at Thayer Academy and Concord Academy in Massachusetts and Lick Wilmerding Academy in San Francisco. He has been the director of operations for the Catz Sports Performance Center since 2007.
Higgins graduated from Hobart in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies and a minor in economics, and holds a master's degree from the University of San Francisco in sports management. Higgins was a member of three NCAA Division III National Champion squads at Hobart (1990, 1991, 1993), and was a team captain and an All-American defender for the Statesmen.
