THE PATH TO A NATIONAL TITLE
The NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships feature 22 teams, which compete for a national title based on a points system that weighs the finish of each boat in its respective race.
The championship begins with four heats for each of the three boats – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four – on Friday. The top two boats from each heat advance to the A/B semifinals while the remaining crews proceed to the repechage races on Friday afternoon. The top two crews from the repechages also advance to the A/B semifinals while the remainders are placed in the C/D semifinals.
From there, the top three boats in each of the A/B semifinals move onto the grand final with the remainder proceeding to the petite final. The top three crews in the C/D semifinals advance to the C final while the rest compete in the D final.
In the finals, each boat earns points based off its finish in its race, and the program with the most points between its three crews at the conclusion of all the races earns the title of NCAA Champion.
BROWN'S HEATS
Brown's first varsity eight earned the No. 13 seed and will race in heat four on Friday, May 25 at 9:36 a.m. The Bears will face fourth-seeded Texas, fifth-seeded Ohio State, 12th-seeded Wisconsin, 20th-seeded UCF, and 21st-seeded Rhode Island.
The Bears' second varsity eight captured the No. 13 seed and will compete in heat four on Friday at 10:24 a.m. The crew will face fourth-seeded Ohio State, fifth-seeded Michigan, 12th-seeded Yale, 20th-seeded UCF, and 21st-seeded Navy.
The program's varsity four gained the No. 8 seed and will race in heat one on Friday at 10:36 a.m. The Bears will meet top-seeded Washington, ninth-seeded Stanford, 16th-seeded Gonzaga, and 17th-seeded Southern California.
BRUNO AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Brown has won seven NCAA titles all-time and qualified for all 22 NCAA Championships since the event began in 1997. The Bears claimed national championships in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2011.
Head coach John Murphy has directed the Bears to all of those titles, and under his watch, Brown has finished in the top five of the championship in 17 of its previous 21 appearances and in the top 10 in 20 of those 21 appearances.
DEBUT IN THE SUNSHINE STATE
The NCAA Championships will make their debut in the state of Florida this spring at Nathan Benderson Park. The park began hosting regattas in 2009 and hosted the 2017 World Championships. Nathan Benderson Park is slated to host NCAAs in 2021 and 2022. The NCAA Championships have taken place in the southeastern United States on three previous occasions – at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 2007 and at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga., in 1998 and 2001.
AT THE IVY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
Brown placed third in the team standings at the 2018 Ivy League Women's Rowing Championship on Sunday, May 13 at Cooper River Park. In the final team standings, Yale took first with 78 points, Princeton placed second with 70 points, and Brown came in third with 64 points. Radcliffe (50 points), Penn (46), Dartmouth (37), Columbia (17), and Cornell (15) rounded out the standings.
The Bears won the C varsity four, earned silver in the third varsity eight, took bronze in the second varsity eight, A varsity four, and B varsity four, and finished in fourth in the first varsity eight.
IN THE POLLS
Brown checks in at No. 12 in the CRCA Coaches Poll from May 16 with No. 8 Yale, No. 9 Princeton, No. 16 Penn, and No. 18 Radcliffe standing as the other Ivy League programs in the poll. No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, and No. 3 Ohio State top the rankings while No. 4 Texas and No. 5 Stanford round out the top five. No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Virginia, and No. 10 Iowa represent the other schools in the top 10. Overall, 16 of the top 17 teams in the poll feature in the NCAA Championships field.
ALL-IVY ACCOLADES
Based off Brown's finish in the first varsity eight, senior Cicely Madden (Weston, Mass.) earned First Team All-Ivy, and senior Jennifer Mundelius (Danville, Calif.) gained Second Team All-Ivy. Madden garnered All-Ivy for the fourth time while Mundelius collected All-Ivy for the second time.
FLORIDA REPRESENTATION
Brown does not carry any student-athletes from the state of Florida on its roster, but assistant coach Alexander Bunkers is a native of Maitland, Fla., and a graduate of Winter Park High School. The Bears do feature three student-athletes from the neighboring state of Georgia – senior Zoe Canaras and freshmen Allie Filan and Clara Warmath – who all hail from Milton.
EAST COAST
Brown will remain on the East Coast for the second straight year at the NCAA Championships after competing at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., last spring. In 2015 and 2016, the Bears made the cross-country trip to race at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif. Earlier this season, Brown raced at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, marking its only competition outside the East Coast this season.
