
Women's Crew Sends 2V8, V4 to A/B Semis at 2018 NCAA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. – Brown University women's crew qualified its second varsity eight and varsity four to the A/B semifinals to highlight its racing on day one of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park.
Making their 22nd straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, the Bears won their repechage in the varsity four and placed second in the reps in the second varsity eight to earn spots in the A/B semis. Brown's first varsity eight came in third in its repechage race and will compete in the C/D semis. In the morning's heats, the 1V8 and V4 each placed third while the 2V8 came in fourth.

Saturday Semifinal and Final Outlook
On Saturday, Brown's 13th-seeded first varsity eight will race in C/D semifinal 2 out of lane four at 8:24 a.m. The crew will face, beginning in lane one, 21st-seeded Rhode Island, 20th-seeded UCF, 15th-seeded Washington State, and 18th-seeded Navy.
The Bears' 13th-seeded second varsity eight will compete in A/B semifinal 2 out of lane six at 9:36 a.m. Brown will meet, from lane one to five, fourth-seeded Ohio State, 12th-seeded Yale, third-seeded Virginia, second-seeded California, and eighth-seeded Iowa.
Brown's eighth-seeded varsity four will race in A/B semifinal one out of lane one at 10:12 a.m. The Bears' will compete against, from lanes two to six, fourth-seeded Virginia, top-seeded Washington, third-seeded Ohio State, seventh-seeded Michigan, and 14th-seeded Iowa.
The top three boats in each A/B semifinal advance to their respective grand finals while the rest proceed to their respective petite finals. The top three crews in each C/D semifinal qualify for the C final while the remaining crews compete in the D final.
The championships' finals will also take place on Saturday. The Bears' 2V8 will race in the petite or grand final at 2:16 p.m. or 2:24 p.m. respectively. Brown's V4 will compete in the petite or grand final at 2:32 p.m. or 2:40 p.m. respectively. The 1V8 will race in the D or C final at 2:48 p.m. or 2:56 p.m. respectively.
Evening Repechage Recap
Brown's 13th-seeded second varsity secured a spot in the A/B semifinals with a second-place finish in repechage one out of lane two with a time of 6:20.550. The Bears' trailed 11th-seeded Princeton (6:19.897) by 0.653 seconds, while topping ninth-seeded Southern Cal (6:21.275) by 0.725 seconds. Brown also edged 15th-seeded Washington State (6:27.755), 17th-seeded Northeastern (6:36.107), 21st-seeded Navy (6:47.977), and 22nd-seeded Jacksonville (7:04.501).
The eighth-seeded varsity four won repechage one out of lane four to claim a spot in the A/B semifinals behind a time of 7:04.417. Brown bested 11th-seeded Indiana (7:07.132) by 2.715 seconds as well as 13th-seeded Princeton (7:11.510), 16th-seeded Gonzaga (7:19.997), 15th-seeded Syracuse (7:20.337), 20th-seeded Northeastern (7:31.212), and 22nd-seeded Jacksonville (7:37.600).
The Bears' 13th-seeded first varsity eight placed third in repechage two out of lane three with a time of 6:14.802, finishing just 1.373 seconds out of the final A/B semifinal qualifying spot behind 14th-seeded Indiana (6:13.429). 10th-seeded Southern Cal (6:13.374) won the race while Brown defeated 16th-seeded Syracuse (6:22.834) by 8.032 seconds in addition to 18th-seeded Navy (6:24.224), 19th-seeded Northeastern (6:34.781), and 21st-seeded Rhode Island (6:34.781).

Brown's 13th-seeded first varsity eight placed third in heat four out of lane five with a time of 6:32.985. The Bears trailed fifth-seeded Ohio State (6:27.620) by 5.365 seconds and race winner and fourth-seeded Texas (6:22.332) by 10.653 seconds. Brown topped 12th-seeded Wisconsin (6:38.960) by 5.975 seconds as well as 20th-seeded UCF (6:46.800) and 21st-seeded Rhode Island (6:50.097).
The Bears' 13th-seeded second varsity eight finished fourth in heat four out of lane five behind a time of 6:42.591. Brown came in 5.060 seconds behind third-place and fourth-seeded Ohio State (6:37.531) while topping 21st-seeded Navy (7:06.996) by 24.405 seconds as well as 20th-seeded UCF (7:14.480). Fifth-seeded Michigan (6:31.535) won the race, and 12th-seeded Yale (6:34.543) placed second.
The eighth-seeded varsity four came in third in heat one out of lane four behind a time of 7:23.533. Brown fell to ninth-seeded Stanford (7:18.708) by 4.825 seconds and to race winner and top-seeded Washington (7:06.045) by 17.488 seconds. The Bears bested 17th-seeded Southern California (7:39.198) by 15.665 seconds as well as 16th-seeded Gonzaga (7:43.640).
A/B Semifinal Breakdown
Brown stood as one of 12 schools to send two or more boats to the A/B semifinals. Nine schools – California, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Yale – qualified all three boats to the A/B semis. Brown (2V8, V4), Indiana (1V8, V4), and Princeton (1V8, 2V8) each sent two boats to the A/B semis. Southern California's 1V8, Syracuse's 2V8, and Washington State's V4 rounded out the 36-boat field.
From the morning's heats, five schools – California, Michigan, Stanford, Texas, and Washington – advanced all three boats directly to the A/B semifinals. Schools to advance two boats included Iowa (1V8, 2V8), Ohio State (1V8, V4), Virginia (2V8, V4), and Yale (2V8, V4). Princeton's 1V8 rounded out the field of 24 boats that advanced directly from the heats to the A/B semifinals.
