PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Cat Seitz hit her second home run of the season, but Brown University softball dropped a 9-3 decision at crosstown rival Providence College in its non-league finale on Tuesday afternoon at Glay Field.

The Bears (8-22) scored one run in each of the first, third, and seventh innings, but the host Friars (10-24) tallied three runs in each of the first and fifth innings on their way to the win.

Seitz (Poway, Calif.) posted her seventh career home run, finishing the game 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a run, and freshman Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) registered a 2-for-2 effort.

For Providence, Julianne Rurka went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a home run, a double, and a run scored. Vanessa Portillo hit a three-run homer, and Annie Flego finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Megan McCune picked up the win (2-6), tossing 3.1 innings and permitting one run with four strikeouts in relief.

The Bears struck first as sophomore Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Okimoto and give Brown a 1-0 edge.

The Friars responded with three runs in the bottom of the first as Mackensie Compton capped the inning with a two-run double to center field.

The visitors cut their deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fourth when junior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) sent an RBI single into right field.

Providence answered with a three-run homer from Portillo in the fifth and a two-run shot from Rurka in the sixth to pull ahead 9-2.

Seitz closed the game's scoring, propelling a solo shot over the wall in left field in the top of the seventh.

Junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) took the loss (3-8), allowing four runs on three hits with two strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Ladd did not give up a hit in 0.2 innings of relief in the sixth.

Next, Brown returns to Ivy League play in a three-game series at Yale with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 21 beginning at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 12:30 p.m.
